News in brief:

BA CityFlyer suspends Menorca and Milan

British Airways is tweaking its schedules from London City and has suspended flights to both Milan and Menorca.

BA CityFlyer operated flights to Menorca for over 10 years whilst flights to Milan have operated intermittently for years. This year, services moved from Linate airport to Malpensa, which is further from the city centre.

BA CityFlyer routes vary far more year-to-year than from Heathrow, so we may yet see flights come back to these destinations in the coming years. It would certainly be surprising not to see a return to flights to Milan at some point, given the city’s importance as Italy’s business hub.

Hyatt acquires 30+ hotels in Germany

Hyatt is continuing its on its growth trajectory, particularly in the UK and Europe where it has historically been under-represented.

The company has announced an exclusive agreement with Lindner Hotels AG, a German company, that will see more than 30 hotels in Germany, Belgium and Central Europe join Hyatt brands.

A map of Lindner properties is here, but fundamentally the vast majority of hotels are located in Germany under the Lidner brand itself. The company also operates a handful of hotels under its own ‘me and all’ brand as well:

  • Lindner Hotel Am Ku’damm Berlin
  • Lindner Congress Hotel Cottbus
  • Lindner Airport Hotel Dusseldorf
  • Lindner Congress Hotel Dusseldorf
  • me and all hotel Dusseldorf
  • Lindner Congress Hotel Frankfurt
  • Lindner Hotel & Residence Main Plaza Frankfurt
  • Lindner Hotel & Sports Academy Frankfurt
  • Lindner Hotel Am Michel Hamburg
  • Lindner Park-Hotel Hagenbeck Hamburg
  • Lindner Hotel City Plaza Cologne
  • Lindner Hotel Dom Residence Cologne
  • Lindner Hotel BayArena Leverkusen
  • me and all hotel Mainz
  • Lindner Nurburgring Congress Hotel
  • Lindner Nurburgring Ferienpark
  • Lindner Nurburgring Motorsport Hotel
  • Lindner Parkhotel & Spa Oberstaufen
  • Lindner Hotel & Spa Binshof Speyer
  • Lindner Strand Hotel Windrose Sylt
  • Lindner Hotel & Sporting Club Wiesensee
  • Lindner WTC Hotel & City Lounge Antwerp
  • Lindner Hotel Am Belvedere Vienna
  • Lindner Grand Hotel Beau Rivage Interlaken
  • Lindner Hotel Gallery Central Bratislava
  • Lindner Golf Resort Portals Nous Mallorca
  • Lindner Hotel Prague Castle
  • Lindner Messe Residence Dusseldorf
  • Lindner Rhein Residence im Rheinhof Dusseldorf
  • Lindner Hotel & Residence Main Plaza Frankfurt

The vast majority of the properties are said to join ‘JdV by Hyatt’, “a collection of independent hotels with unique personalities and a true reflection of their locations.”

This is sensible in the short term, given the lack of conformance to brand standards, but it would be nice to see Hyatt pick out some of the more interesting properties (such as the historic Lindner Grand Hotel Beau Rivage Interlaken) for conversion to one of Hyatt’s core brands.

My Cityflyer flights SOU-NCE next summer just been cnx. Looks like they’ve pulled that route too.

    • Rob says:

      They have, plus some others.

      • Mikeact says:

Hopefully, most BA SOU flights will be retained. They have been excellent for a week away somewhere.

        • ElSemm says:

Defo. I live in Winchester so would have been great to get the 7 min train instead of driving to LHR. Clearly not enough locals here have friends with a house in Nice 😊

    • Richie says:

Positioning flights from DUB and EDI to SOU for May 23 are still bookable on BA.com

  • tw33ty says:

The two lindner hotels in Hamburg are quite nice, the Lindiner Park-Hotel Hagenbeck being the better of the two, only issue is it’s location a bit in no man’s land next to the zoo.

  • TimM says:

I always regarded Malpensa as the tourist airport and Linate as the business airport so quite surprised at Cityflyer using Malpensa.

If Cityflyer have a spare Embraer they could return it to Manchester to operate the popular winter sun routes from there. Just a suggestion.

    • NorthernLass says:

If only! I suspect though, that BA has pretty much given up on MAN, with the recent gutting of the domestic schedule and abandonment of the lounge.
The summer routes which operated for a couple of years are sadly missed.

      • yorkieflyer says:

Yes but EasyJet out of Liverpool has been a revelation

      • TimM says:

The abandonment of the lounge was particularly gutting. It was, especially when double its size, a stunning lounge and a hark back to when BA used to operate long-haul from Manchester. I am hoping that when the likes of Ryanair et al move to the expanded T2 and T1 has been demolished/converted into a walkway, there will be excess lounge capacity at T3 and BA may move back in.

        • QwertyKnowsBest says:

          +1

        • NorthernLass says:

The lounge is currently being used as extra seating, BA could absolutely move back in there. It doesn’t seem to be widely known, though, it was lovely and quiet on Tuesday and I had an entire row of seats to myself overlooking the runway. Hope it stays that way as the rest of T3 was a zoo …

      • Nick says:

Manchester suffers from the endemic problem that there aren’t enough people willing to pay above average fares to cover the higher cost base BA has over the LCCs. I’ll get abuse for saying that but it’s no less true for it.

If – and it’s a big if – BAEF succeeds in creating a reasonable cost base then the logical next step for them is regional expansion. So it’s not outside the realms of possibility that more BA tailfins will return, but it definitely won’t be mainline.

        • John T says:

For short haul yes but doesn’t Virgin have good success from MAN with their high prices?

  • SamG says:

If the airports weren’t in such a pickle I suspect BA would do rather well adding extra Manchester/Glasgow flights at the moment to take advantage of the Avanti meltdown!

IIRC there was something to do with slots at Linate and BA lost some – they were leasing some I think – so presumably preferred to utilise what it has left at LHR with bigger aircraft

  • MilesOnPoint says:

Are there any more noises about fleet renewal at BA Cityflyer?

In 2019 there was talk of them needing to refresh their fleet with the Embraer 190 aircraft ageing and less fuel efficient, with either the Embraer E2 or the Airbus A220 (Bombardier C-Series) as the potential replacement.

Personally I’d love to see the A220, it’s a great passenger experience, would increase capacity, is already certified for LCY (Swiss fly them there) and has a much longer range, opening up new route possibilities.

That being said, the Embraer E2 seems more likely as it would require minimal training for crew and Pilots who currently work on the 190 aircraft…

    • Richie says:

A few/several A220s with fuel tanks big enough for flights to the Canary Islands and Turkish resorts would be a game changer for weekend flying in the Autumn/ Winter/ Spring when the Mykonos/ Santorini cash cow is not possible.

      • Joe says:

Winter sun weekends from LCY to the Canaries would be great please BA if you’re listening!

        • Nick says:

LCY would need to make significant modifications the airfield for A220s to be viable for BACF. They’re clearly the best answer but if only two stands are currently capable of handling the (significantly larger than everything else there) aircraft then it would be a problem for BACF. The current Embraers have enough life left in them to keep plodding along for a while.

          • Willy says:

Stands 21-28 can all take A220 and E195E2 aircraft. They just need to move the kit stored on them at the mo and have to use buses until the terminal work is complete.

          • Richie says:

Airports find capital investment remarkably quickly where there are revenues to be had.

          • Richie says:

There have been no Swiss flights from LCY between 6am and 8.30 am and between 10am and 12noon today, Those A220 gates have availability.

    • Rhys says:

A220 would be my preference too. We can only hope…

That said, the current E190 fleet is ‘only’ 11 years old on average.

      • MilesOnPoint says:

+1 Rhys. Do let us know if you hear anything on the CityFlyer fleet front 👍🏻

  • Gordon says:

Great news re Hyatt, We plan to see friends in Germany and visit the Black Forest.

    • RussellH says:

none of them are anywhere near the Black Forest.
The upmarket hotel there all seem to be privately owned.

      • Gordon says:

@RussellH. I am aware of the hotel locations, I didn’t say I was staying near the Black Forest, I said I was visiting the Black Forest?!

  • L Allen says:

Lindner, Linder, Liner, Lidner! I can see why they signed up with Hyatt if they can’t get the name of their brand consistent.

    • RussellH says:

There is also “Frankfjurt” on the list. Even my browser recognises this as wrong.

      • Rob says:

        Rhys is half-German, I think you’ll find that’s the local spelling 🙂

        • RussellH says:

I assumed that Rhys (being intelligent) had done a cut-and-paste, and the mistake was Lindner’s 🙂
Of course, it could be the way they pronounce the name in the other Frankfurt (an der Oder). Saxon pronunciation can be completely unintelligible.

          • Rhys says:

I had to type the entire list out manually from an image which is why it’s so bad!

          • Bagoly says:

Typical German office standard of computer literacy!
(At CNC machines they are leaders)

          • Bagoly says:

Lovely to see a Brit aware of the city where my nearest Real and REWE supermarkets are (they give Payback points which convert to M&Ms, conversion bonuses of 20-25% come round fairly regularly!) 🙂
But it’s at least 130km from any part of Saxony.

          • Lady London says:

            ditto Hessisch. Both equally unintelligible

        • Gordon says:

I see the editing police are out in force(Excuse the pun) this morning, I think the majority of readers understand the article and would not mistakenly book a hotel in Another country instead of Germany 🙄

          • TimM says:

You might well think that. When I was living in Milan, I was offered a temporary job in Monaco. I jumped at the opportunity. That is when I learned that there were two Monacos in Italian – the Monaco we know and the other one, Munich in English. Getting the wrong country is more easily done that imagined 🙂

      • RussellH says:

They have also listed the Düsseldorf Airport Hotel twice…

The only Lindner I have stayed at is no longer part of the group…

    • tw33ty says:

I actually can’t see why they’ve signed up, the hotels I use in Germany from the group are always fully booked, so they can’t be after traffic.
But hey, not going to complain, another points earning opportunity for hotels I already use.

  • Toby says:

    Menorca no!

Just have a slew of cancellation emails – please tell me they will at least carry on flying there – just from another London airport.
