British Airways chops three Southampton routes for Summer 2023 – what’s left?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Some HfP readers may be surprised to know that British Airways runs a relatively large number of routes out of Southampton Airport.

The launch of these services got caught up in the pandemic (the original announcement was made in December 2020) so they have never had much of a promotional push. The initial route launches were, in many cases, heavily delayed or suspended altogether.

There is a full service planned for Summer 2023, although three routes have just been culled.

British Airways southampton

Southampton Airport was, as the picture below shows, a major Flybe base before the airline collapsed. The BA services are a welcome respite for the airport which lost virtually all of its scheduled services at that point, although many routes have been picked up by other airlines since.

The BA flights use the Embraer E190 aircraft which serve London City Airport during the week but have nothing to do when City is closed over the weekend.

Which routes were pulled last week?

Three routes from Southampton were cancelled for Summer 2023. The three routes used one aircraft, which will now be stationed elsewhere.

The cancelled routes are:

  • Florence
  • Ibiza
  • Nice

Which BA routes remain at Southampton for Summer 2023?

Here are the routes that remain.

Most routes operate between late April / mid May and late October on weekends only, albeit you can’t yet book to the end of the schedule.

Some of the routes below only have one departure per week. You are locked into a seven night trip unless you fly back to a different British Airways airport or fly back to Southampton on a different airline.

  • Alicante
  • Bergerac
  • Dublin
  • Edinburgh
  • Faro
  • Limoges
  • Malaga
  • Mykonos
  • Palma

What routes does BA fly from Southampton over the Winter?

Not many, but there is some life!

  • Chambery
  • Edinburgh
  • Salzburg

Live in London?

Many Londoners have probably never flown from Southampton. It is, however, surprisingly easy.

You can get a direct train from London Waterloo to Southampton Airport Parkway station. You will be in the small terminal building within a couple of minutes.

Is there a lounge?

Yes. Here is our review of the Spitfire Lounge at Southampton Airport.

Is there Business Class?

Yes, Business Class is available. As these are Embraer aircraft with 2×2 seating, however, there is no ’empty middle seat’ benefit. You would get access to the Spitfire Lounge.

Booking

Flights are bookable as usual via ba.com, for cash or Avios.

There is a special page on ba.com for the Southampton routes here, although it has not been updated in some time and contains multiple closed routes.

The BA page on the Southampton Airport website does seem to be current.

  • Metty says:

Because of the nature of the way the aircraft position in, you can’t do 7 nights for all the routes mentioned above…..Mykonos is outbound on Sunday and inbound on Saturday. Edinburgh is outbound Sunday AM and arrives late Friday. Dublin is outbound Sunday AM and arrives Saturday AM.

If looking on ba.com for core summer 23 dates, this is a rough guide

    Saturday
    d0735 Palma, d0920 Alicante, d1130 Limoges, d1445 Bergerac, d1450 Faro, d1505 Malaga

    Sunday
    d0740 Malaga, d0800 Palma, d0900 Edinbugh, d0910 Bergerac, d1005 Mykonos, d1040 Dublin, d1450 Palma

    • pauldb says:

Bergerac is pretty flexible with I think a second flight on Saturdays and one on Tuesday. Any other midweeks?

      • Richie says:

Tuesday in summer is Bergerac day. The aircraft does LCY-EGC-SOU-EGC-LCY, good for HfPers who fancy LCY-EGC-LCY for some TPs and a bit of lunch.

    • Mikeact says:

The Sunday departures are all reasonably early and the lounge may or may not be a quick option…or may not be open at all as we found out.

  • Chris P says:

I found Southampton Airport very poor compared to previously. It seemed completely overwhelmed by the number of passengers. Over 30 minutes to check in for Club Europe and 45 minutes in security queue. They do not allow club passengers to use fast track security, this is for staff only apparently. The flight to LIG was excellent though.

    • 1ATL says:

My experience of SOU this summer (June, September and October) is like night and day compared to yours. No lines, no security queues, plenty of seating options in the lounge with waiter service for hot food. The fact they stagger international arrivals so that generally you’re only queueing with passengers from your own flight at immigration was a welcome change compared to all the tensa barriers at the LHR and LGW UK Borders. Will always use SOU over LGW/LHR wherever possible.

      • Mikeact says:

        +1

      • Chris P says:

Weird – maybe I just picked the wrong day (4 July) There seemed to be lots of flights going to the same place in Ireland. The whole check in area and terminal was mobbed. Had not flown from SOU for a number of years and remember coming away with the thought I would stick to LGW in future.

  • Alex B says:

Does City actually close at the weekend? I flew from there a few Sundays ago and there were lots of flights going.

Seems to just be Saturday evenings it’s closed?

  • Mikeact says:

As our local airport, it’s been pretty useful for us, for short week breaks to catch the sun somewhere. And ideal to hop over to AMS to catch our long haul KLM flights.
Now that approval has been given to lengthen the runway, it will be interesting to see what happens next.

    • Nick says:

How long will the new runway be? ISTR it’s still only going to be enough for a (not fully laden) A319, which won’t be enough for Ryanair and likely not for easyJet either given how inflexible it makes an operation. A bit like FLR, which is the sole reason Vueling keeps a few A319s. Sadly the most appropriate carrier (Volotea) doesn’t have enough brand presence in the UK to make it work.

      • Jonathan says:

If they can make A321 work on it, then they’ll be one a much more competitive airport, since the A321 can fly to New York without any refuelling stopover

        • Rhys says:

You’re very optimistic if you think anyone is going to launch flights from Southampton to New York any time soon!

          • Richie says:

For new yorkers, South Hampton is in the Hamptons, no need to fly really, helicopter possibly.

          • Mr Sound says:

If that route was good enough for The Titanic then I’m sure it’s good enough for Stelios!

      • Save East Coast Rewards says:

I always wondered how FLR was lucky enough to get LCY flights when it’s not really a business destination.

  • lumma says:

Wouldn’t it be a good idea for BA to show Southampton departures as a suggestion when looking to book to/from London on these routes?

Not in a Ryanair way of calling it “Southampton London South Airport” or similar, but people who live south or west of London might be unaware of the flights

    • Richard E says:

Great idea. I work in central London, near Waterloo, and the train to Southampton Airport Parkway Station takes just over an hour. Far easier than some of the SIX(!) “London” airports.

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

At the moment BA only looks at airports that are officially in an IATA city code, so LON includes Luton but it does not include Southampton. MIL includes Bergamo. I don’t think it has the facility to recommend other nearby airports that aren’t part of a city code. For example when BA was codesharing on the Loganair flights from Teesside to London, they didn’t show up as a suggestion for someone looking for Newcastle. There may be those in Darlington who just searched for Newcastle because they knew BA don’t fly from Teesside or Leeds but would have been interested in the codeshare when it was operating.

It would be important to make it clear when searching that these alternatives are not for the city booked but it might come in useful for some.

    • TimM says:

Use Skyscanner.net instead. Tick the ‘Add nearby airports’ box. It has a large radius.

  • dave says:

I thought they might start doing flights out of Bournemouth after they parked all their aircraft there during the pandemic due to its lengthy runway

    • Rhys says:

I don’t think route decisions are made based on where aircraft are parked, unfortunately!

    • Richie says:

BTW A BACF E190 can’t fly Southampton to Lanzarote, but Bournemouth to Lanzarote is just about possible.

  • rob keane says:

“You can get a direct train from London Waterloo to Southampton Airport Parkway station. You will be in the small terminal building within a couple of minutes.”

    bullet train ?

  • iamfugly says:

If you live in London, unless you value waiting in an airport with no more than 50 other passengers, I am not sure why you would travel the hour and a quarter to fly from an airport where the flights are more often than not, 3 or 4 times the price of the equivalent from LHR or LGW and the schedule is sketchy at best.

    • Rob says:

Southampton is quicker than Heathrow for a lot of London ….

    • Mikeact says:

You are right…when I was paying for flights it infuriated me that I was forced to fly either LHR or LGW, because of the fares out of SOU. A letter of complaint was met with total silence .Whether or not that is still the situation I don’t know as we use reward seats.
