British Airways moves 12 long haul routes from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3

British Airways is moving a decent chunk of its long haul operation from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 from next Spring.

12 routes will be operating from Terminal 3 instead of Terminal 5, allowing qualifying passengers to enjoy the Cathay Pacific and Qantas lounges (forget the British Airways ones!) and the American Express Centurion lounge.

Which long haul routes are moving to Terminal 3?

These are routes moving from the start of the Summer 2023 timetable on 26th March:

  • Accra
  • Austin
  • Bahrain
  • Bermuda
  • Grand Cayman
  • Las Vegas
  • Nairobi
  • Nassau
  • Providenciales
  • San Diego
  • Sao Paulo
  • Vancouver

Some of these routes operated from Terminal 3 between April and July in Summer 2022, before British Airways chose to consolidate all long-haul flights in Terminal 5.

The changes are already reflected at ba.com.

Note that earlier reports that Phoenix flights were moving to Terminal 3 were incorrect. British Airways has now sent out emails to passengers saying that they were informed in error.

Which lounge should you visit in Terminal 3?

If your flight is now operating from Terminal 3, you will be able to access some world class airport lounges. Don’t bother with the British Airways or American Airlines offerings!

If you have a British Airways Executive Club Gold card or are flying in First Class, the obvious choice is the Cathay Pacific First Class lounge, reviewed here, image above.

If you have a British Airways Executive Club Silver card, it is a toss up between the Cathay Pacific Business Class lounge, reviewed here and the Qantas London Lounge, reviewed here.

If you don’t have status but do have an American Express Platinum card, you can visit The Centurion Lounge, reviewed here.

If you don’t have any status but do have a Priority Pass, there is a No1 Lounge in Terminal 3, reviewed here. You can guarantee entry by paying £6 to reserve a spot via this website. Bookings for cash can be made here. There is also a Club Aspire lounge in Priority Pass, review here, but this cannot be prebooked.

Rhys selflessly spent a day touring the various lounges in Terminal 3, and you can read his final rankings here.

  • Bernard H says:

Just been informed by email that move of Phoenix to T3 was an error – so it’s staying at T5.

  • 01A says:

Can I use Cathay and Qantas lounges in T3 when flying on an award ticket in Club World without any OneWorld status?
    Thanks.

  • ChrisM says:

We’re used to Vancouver being out of T3 (until 2022) and that flight doesn’t leave till late afternoon so lots of time to get there. Not so good about NAS/GCM as it leaves in morning, can be as early as 9:30, so more chance of missing connections when arriving on a domestic. That will be a costly change, requiring overnight at LHR 🙁

    • NorthernLass says:

We usually fly down the night before anyway for that one, especially after our 2019 trip when our domestic was cancelled at 4 am on the day of travel and we had a nail-biting taxi journey to LHR (cost to BA, £300). Fortunately it was a Saturday morning so the roads were clear!

  • Sam says:

There should really be a connection bus service for departing passengers (not just for arrivals at the moment) between T3/T5 given BA’s dual terminal operation. Many other airports with multiple terminals would have physically allowed this if the terminal buildings are adjoining (see Singapore and Taipei) or else would have set up bus services (also see Singapore T4)

    • Ben says:

What on earth are you on about? The connection bud service is for departing passengers, how else would they get there? Walk?

  • Terry Butcher says:

Don’t be too quick to right off the British Airways Lounge in T3 – the rose champagne in the First section was the best I could find in the entire terminal. That said, the lounges in terminal three do not, to my mind, make up for the atrociously slow premium security lane.

How they dare call it fast track and I do not know. Fifty mid to one hour is not at all uncommon / afar cry from the first wing.

  • Koment says:

Aspire in T3 has just been shortlisted to win World’ Best Airport Lounge

    • Rob says:

I think it won actually! They were pushing the voting like nothing else on social media though ….

  • Robin says:

Do you have any idea WHY they are moving to T3 . Capacity issues?

  • Alan says:

Personally I wouldn’t bother with the Centurion Lounge in T3 and certainly not in LAX. Not a massively inspiring spread of food, very crowded and all internal. Stick with the other lounges.
