RwandAir launches direct Heathrow to Kigali flights

We wouldn’t normally cover route launches of this sort, but it is worth a mention given that RwandAir is planning to join the oneworld alliance alongside British Airways.

Should it go ahead – and we explained more in this article last month – it would open up new options in Central Africa for British Airways Executive Club tier point earning. RwandAir currently serves 28 destinations across East, Central, West, and Southern Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

As RwandAir CEO Yvonne Makolo said at a conference last month:

RwandAir launches non-stop Heathrow to Kigali flights

“Joining oneworld will help us gradually improve our products and services and what we are offering to our passengers.”

And in a media statement she added:

“We are exploring the possibility of entering the oneworld alliance. This would be a perfect fit for RwandAir and help us forge closer ties with like-minded airline partners overseas.”

RwandAir currently flies from Heathrow to Kigali via a stop in Brussels, using a fleet of next-generation A330neo aircraft.

From 6th November, the Brussels stop disappears. The flights from Heathrow to Kigali will become non-stop.

Frequency is also increasing, from the current three flights per week via Brussels to four flights per week non-stop.

You can already earn and redeem Avios on RwandAir – you don’t need to wait for possible oneworld membership. This is due to the existing partnership with Qatar Airways, which now uses Avios as its reward currency. You can learn more about using Avios on RwandAir in this article.

  • Henry Young says:

Does this mean that immigrants deported via the UK Government’s dodgy Rwanda deal will be able to collect Avios on the UK taxpayer. Seems like a good perk !

    • RussellH says:

I was just wondering why anyone would pay cash or avios, when one could just ask to be sent there at public expense.

      • planeconcorde says:

The catch is that would just be a one-way outbound ticket. If you should want to return then…

  • Dominic says:

Off-topic, but Radisson appear to have launched a new loyalty programme. Would be interested to see some analysis.

One positive is that my Platinum status appears to have been extended for yet another year, keeping me as Platinum until December 2023 (moved from 2022).

  • Colin Thames says:

Just bumping my earlier message. I’d the free Dragonpass card deal still available, which Rob flagged back in May?

  • Jon says:

The Guardian is reporting that “Suella Braverman departs as UK Home Secretary”. I think they may have meant “Suella Braverman deports UK as Home Secretary” – hence the sudden demand for direct flights to Rwanda, presumably. BA-dum-tish. My scheduled deportation isn’t until Monday so I’m here all week. I’d get my coat if I hadn’t burnt it to keep warm etc.

  • Vistaro says:

Perhaps me and for o rational reason WB like ET and to some extent TK is on my “no fly” list, I’m convinced there’s going to be serious trouble at some point either on the ground or in the air, to be open I have no facts (except maybe 16 dead in IST around 2016) to support this just a gut feel after spending 30 years in too many countries!

  • FP says:

“Could you pay £5 via DragonPass to reserve a lounge spot and then turn up with a Priority Pass issued by American Express to get in?”

No. It makes you buy the whole pass for £18.50
