News in brief:

Good Newcastle hotel deal on Groupon

It’s been a while since we ran a Groupon hotel package, but reader Daniel flagged up that a Newcastle deal we covered back in June is still available.

As per this page of Groupon, the Hotel Indigo in Newcastle – it isn’t named but it is clearly the Indigo – is offering:

  • rooms for two, with breakfast and 1pm check out, from £69
  • King room with balcony for two, with breakfast and 1pm check out, from £89

You will get an extra 10% off if this is your first Groupon purchase (or you create a new account) and use promo code TRIPLE.

It is definitely the Hotel Indigo. The PR photo used by Groupon is the same one we used in our article here on a 2021 Travelzoo deal.

Not all dates are available, but they are clearly shown on Groupon and you need to lock in your date at the time of booking. You can book for up to 31st December 2022.

You won’t earn any IHG One Rewards points and you won’t get any elite benefits, but the cash saving – which should be at least £50 – makes up for it.

You can see more on Groupon here.

Save £200 on an easyJet Holiday with American Express

American Express has launched a new cashback offer with easyJet Holidays.

If you are targetted for this offer it will show under the ‘Offers’ tab on your online statement page or in the Amex app. You need to click ‘Save to Card’ to activate.

The deal gets you £200 cashback on a £1,000+ booking with easyJet Holidays. Your payment needs to be processed by 30th November.

Flights must depart from UK airports, but apart from that there is no onerous small print.

No easyJet offer for me on any card but there are a few £5 off £50 spend at BP offers.

  • vol says:

    Genuine question

Anyone here had any experience with EasyJet Holidays?

    Any good?

    • Eric says:

Very good and I have found them to be cheaper than Jet2, Tui, etc

      • SamG says:

They handled an overnight delay that my sister had recently very well. Easyjet flight only passengers had to go to the airport themselves that evening to be looked after but Easyjet holidays local reps picked them up at lunchtime so they weren’t hanging around, took them to a good all inclusive resort and took them back to the airport the next day. Good comms throughout considering it was early Sunday AM UK time

Stayed in the Hotel Indigo Newcastle once and the bed was terrible. It wasn’t fixed at the headboard so would move around the room at the slightest movement.

    • TGLoyalty says:

      Slightest movement … 😉

      • lumma says:

They wouldn’t let me check in early so I went to the Crown Posada pub and had way too much of an 8% IPA for an early afternoon.

Maybe it was the entire room that was moving…

  • NorthernLass says:

I didn’t have the bed problem! It’s a decent hotel (and definitely a bargain for £69 at current hotel prices generally) though it doesn’t compare to the lovely Durham one.

    • lumma says:

Maybe I should’ve said something then. Bed was on wheels so it was like trying to sleep in a shopping trolley with a mattress.

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

I was hoping weekend dates so cod visit friends and family bit not available on the offer and think I’d be indifferent about the hotel if paying full (current) price!

  • Rob H not Rob says:

Nice hotel the Indigo, never had any issues there. Quite generous with upgrades too.

    • RussellH says:

Been there three times, I think. Never upgraded, but no complaints at all I always booked without breakfast and they always told me breakfast was included when checking in.
Several free bottles of beer the first time too.
Decent breakfast, and great staff, with typical Geordie humour.

  • Richard B says:

The slot timings require additional Virgin planes arriving in the late afternoon/early evening which will limit what Virgin can do with them. Arguably they are best timed for Asian routes.
Launching Seoul before russian airspace is available would be brave..

    • SamG says:

Asia or South America. So Sao Paulo could be one. The other slight possibility is Lima. BA haven’t returned and the Peruvians no longer need a visa for the UK as of today. My Avianca flights to Bogota always seem to be carrying passengers who are flying onwards to Lima in the biz cabin

      • Richie says:

Which airline alliance are LATAM in these days?

        • Rob says:

They’re not although, with Delta being a big shareholder now, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them in SkyTeam at some point.

          • Richie says:

Virgin being part of SkyTeam is looking very interesting for future multi stop trip opportunities.

  • Jonty says:

Anyone know if you can book an easyJet holiday with, for example, flights seven nights apart but only a couple of nights hotel, as you can with BA holidays?

    • Jonathan says:

      I’m not sure

The BA style system of creating a holiday booking can’t be done with Virgin, booking a single day (or night) car rental / hotel stay during a stay that’s however long

Before the pandemic, I once booked a single night in a BA hotel, and my outbound flight was a near month before my inbound flight, by simply booking a single night, it meant that I only had to pay the deposit on what was largely a flight booking to secure it, and earn an Avios point on every £ of the overall price, on top of what you get from actually flying !

Virgin do need to improve theirs, let’s hope EasyJet are good !

    • AP says:

They are package holidays including transfer, so not like BA.

  • Mr(s) Entitled says:

Have Virgin not rented, rather than bought, if the slots are from April to October?

    • Rob says:

No, it shows as a purchase and not a lease if you click the link.

      • Mikeact says:

What would the likely cost have been ?

        • Rob says:

My best guess is (given that the Heathrow record is $75m for a slot pair and there are 12 involved here) this is a ‘soft’ deal because it is being done with a joint venture partner, with a nominal cost but with some guarantees in case KLM needs other Heathrow slots in a few years time.

KLM is almost certainly not using the slots at the moment and, with Schiphol capacity cuts remaining in place until at least next March and possibly all through 2023, it may be happy to be shot of them and not have to worry about them being forfeited.

Although, of course, the fewer Heathrow flights operated by KLM, the lower the feed it can drive to Virgin’s routes.

    • SamG says:

Iirc there are some summer only slots at Heathrow as they allow slightly more flights than in the winter
