In exciting news for Virgin Points holders, and indeed holders of the Virgin Atlantic credit cards who have 2-4-1 or upgrade vouchers to burn, Virgin Atlantic has announced a new route to The Maldives.

It is also lanching a new route to the Turks & Caicos Islands.

Tickets are NOT bookable yet but will be soon. Services start in Winter 2023.

Virgin Atlantic to fly to The Maldives

Virgin Atlantic to The Maldives

Flights will operate 3x weekly from London Heathrow.

The first flight will be on 22nd October 2023 (I might need to pull rank on Rhys for the press trip ….). Tickets will be available from 30th November 2022.

It will be operated with a Boeing 787-9, which means that you will get the old style ‘coffin’ Upper Class seat. The configuration is 31 Upper Class, 35 Premium and 192 Economy.

Virgin Atlantic to Turks & Caicos

Flights will operate 2x weekly from London Heathrow.

The first flight will be on 15th November 2023, with tickets bookable from 11th January 2023.

It will use a Boeing 787-9 with the same configuration as above.

These new routes add to the Virgin Atlantic island portfolio which includes recent launches to the Bahamas (December 2021), St Vincent and the Grenadines (October 2021) and the upcoming return to St Lucia.

Virgin Atlantic Maldives Turks Caicos

Virgin Atlantic now guarantees Virgin Points availability

Following the (impressive) changes to Virgin Flying Club availability made this year, there is now guaranteed availability for Virgin Points on all flights.

Virgin Atlantic now guarantees 12 award seats on EVERY Virgin Atlantic flight.

This comprises:

The snag is that Virgin Atlantic is opening up booking for the Maldives on the very edge of the booking window.

Virgin Atlantic opens up booking 331 days ahead, so when seats become available to The Maldives on 30th November 2022, only the first couple of outbound flights in October 2023 will be bookable. There will not be a huge reward seat dump on Day 1 because the flights are too far ahead.

Turks & Caicos will be different. The flights are tagged onto the existing Montego Bay service so reward seats will be shared.

Juha Jarvinen, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic, commented:

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to add these two exotic new routes to our flying portfolio. Nothing sets our hearts soaring like a new destination to explore, so, with two about join our network, there’s only really one question. Where to first?

“The Maldives has always been an incredibly popular destination for Virgin Atlantic Holidays customers, which is why we couldn’t wait to give them the opportunity to travel to the idyllic location in style onboard Virgin Atlantic aircraft.

“We’re delighted to begin flying to the Turks & Caicos islands, as we continue to grow our Caribbean portfolio, offering more choice for our customers to explore these beautiful islands and enjoy some winter sun.

“We know our customers will be over the moon with the introduction of these new destinations, both offering something unique for travellers looking to either simply relax or explore a new corner of the world.”

It’s great to see Virgin Atlantic expanding beyond North America. Let’s see if 2023 also sees some new Asian routes too.

  • NC says:

Is this using the new Heathrow slots you wrote about before? So this means Seoul is not happening?

    • Rob says:

We were told 4 new routes next year. 2 down ….

    • Stuart says:

Would ICN be a sensible route for VS as they are joining SkyTeam in 2023 so could connect with KE to other NE Asia cities (Busan, Tokyo, Osaka etc.) more than any other Asian city (I guess VS to HAN/SGN for O&D or VN flights is too low yield). Just having to take a longer LHR-ICN-LHR route due to the Russian airspace ban.

      • BuildBackBetter says:

Why would they fly to same place as another Skyteam member? Wouldn’t they be better off flying to somewhere skyteam isn’t present?

  • John T says:

They really need to think about either retrofitting their 787 fleet in Upper or retiring them ASAP. You are a fool if you are booking this vs BA Club Suite. The seats were terrible 10 years ago and they are even worse now.

    • Spaghetti Town says:

Probably to be retired and replaced by A330neo’s and A350 mix.

    • SP says:

Except BA doesn’t have Club Suite on every route. Old CW is just as bad.

      • meta says:

It’s not as bad as Virgin where you have to break your neck to look out from the window from every seat. And let’s not talk about the fact that you have to get up to turn it into a bed. At least on the old CW there are some good seats.

        • VSCXFAN says:

THEY turn it into a comfortable bed with liner and duvet while you change into a sleepsuit – as against BA leaving you to recline your seat and sleep on or under a thin blanket in your clothes.

      • John T says:

Both MLE and PLS are Club Suites routes. As I said, in business class you are a fool if you are choosing Virgin over BA to these places.
Virgin should dedicate their 787s with their inferior products to low yield leisure destinations. What about Cancun? Phuket? Bali?

        • Amanda Battman says:

I think you will find that for winter 2023 BA are back to using B787 planes which I suspect will not have been retrofitted. So old Club layout.

  • david says:

From checking a few months back, it seems I needed to remortgage to find a suitable place to stay in T&Cs with no suitable point redemptions. as its pegged to $ its making things even worse. Has this changed?

  • Amy C says:

Hmmmmm Maldives is monsoon like in November. 🤔
But still good news as near start of the season ‘proper’. Just need to worry about the taxes etc now.

  • Rich says:

I went to the Maldives end of last November and didn’t see any rain! Nov – March usually best months waterside!

  • MT says:

Biggest issue is you will never be able to use the credit card vouchers as you have to call to use them. Maldives seats will be snapped up long before you get through via online bookings. Is the biggest frustration with the cc, the vouchers are useless on popular routes.

    • Charlie says:

You can book online and call up to retrospectively apply a voucher.

      • Alan says:

        Good point 👍

      • DanGK says:

I did this last year. After initially being told it couldn’t be done, they did it but said it would be the last time.

        • Charlie says:

That’s interesting. I also did it last year with no problem. Then I booked another ticket this year and when I phoned up, the person said it couldn’t be done as the ticket had already been issued. However, I waited a week, phoned back and this time I was told there was no problem with using a voucher. So I guess it depends on who you talk to.

  • Rob H not Rob says:

Best Hotel redemption in the Maldives please. . . . . go !

    • pbcold says:

Conrad for good quality and availability.

    • Lee says:

A week booked for next summer at new Hilton

    • Adil says:

Had a stay last week at a St Regis overwater villa for 7 nights at 521k Marriott points, was upgraded to a sunset view as well as Platinum Bonvoy member. Food was obscenely priced though so keep that in mind when choosing.

  • NorthernLass says:

So they’ve started flights to two of the most expensive destinations on the planet when we’re on the cusp of a global recession and the £ has tanked against the $, which is the currency used in T & C! Of course this is just an observation from a bitter northerner who will have no use for these routes 😉

    • Rob says:

As noted, you only need 31 per flight to fill Upper Class! I think that’s manageable. 2 of those will be redemptions too 🙂

    • MT says:

The only issue they may have is filling economy to the Maldives. Speaking to BA crew on a few of the flights it’s the one route they could do with more First Class on let alone Business. Its down the back that has empty seats.
