InterContinental Carlton Cannes to become a Regent hotel

The InterContinental Carlton hotel in Cannes – currently undergoing a much needed and much delayed refurbishment – will not reopen under the InterContinental brand.

It was announced yesterday that the hotel will become a Regent when it reopens in ‘Spring’ 2023. The official name will be ‘Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel’.

IHG says that it will be ‘a flagship property within the new generation of Regent Hotels & Resorts’, for what that is worth.

InterContinental Hong Kong will also reopen as a Regent in 2023 although this was long planned and – for those with long memories – the hotel was originally built for the Regent chain long before IHG came to manage it.

It remains unclear how IHG intends to treat the Regent and InterContinental brands. It seems, at present, that ‘better’ IHG properties are being transitioned to Regent. However, if InterContinental loses its flagship hotels in key business cities then the image of the whole brand will fall.

My thought was that the ‘resort’ properties should transition to Regent, leaving InterContinental as the home of city centre business hotels. It always seemed a little odd to see InterContinental beach resorts.

This doesn’t seem to be the strategy, however. The press release says that the Regent brand will be used for “the most refined experiences for modern luxury trendsetters”.

In practical terms, the key difference for HfP readers is that Cannes will no longer be somewhere where you can burn an InterContinental Ambassador ‘free weekend night’ voucher or enjoy Ambassador or Royal Ambassador benefits.

It makes sense to rebrand some of the better ICs as Regent as the IC brand is currently incoherent in terms of quality and price with the highest ADR range in the IHG brand portfolio and Regent (as was) is a superior brand. One can only hope Cannes will re-emerge as a better hotel as it had become so shoddy and the loos had become a no go area for ordinary guests.

    • Tom says:

Exactly. IC right now is everything from hotels competing with Marriott/Hilton through hotels competing with Conrad/JW Marriott to a small number of flagship properties competing with Waldorf Astoria/St. Regis. The highest end properties are being tainted as a result, makes sense to try to rebrand. Similarly, the lowest end IC (think O2 in London) should really be Crowne Plaza except that’s also a very poor brand. IHG and Accor both have a load of brands that are largely meaningless in terms of universal standards and I don’t know how they fix this without massive rebranding.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Mmm if you think O2 is the low end you’ve seen nothing!

Better ones get changed to Regent, opens gap for an new IC where they’d like a new IC but the current can’t meet that standard they sign up a Regent. Sometimes new brands do make sense 😉

One has to hope that IHG will maintain Regent standards that were much higher (and connected to Four Seasons) than IC. I don’t know what say Regent still has in its capacity as a large but minority shareholder. There were quite a few negative changes already at the Regent in Beijing in 2019. IHG panders to owners too much and doesn’t really have luxury in its DNA. Four Seasons will just walk away when owners try to cut corners, hence many recent bust ups.

the owner of Regent was the group that owns the Regent Taipai – not sure they hold any other assets?

they have a 49% stake so probably still a significant say but what influence does that have when you operate asset light?

Regent Singapore leaves in Jan to be rebranded as a Conrad and refurbished during 2023/4

  • Dace says:

AMB really needs to apply to IC and Regent, cannot see the point of it if it doesn’t give the benefits at its’ best brand. Additionally, Regent’s footprint is way too small at the moment to try and establish a new version of AMB aside from the current one.

Olé! I got 4 flights for £26 each today, which will be £16 after my discount on Budgetair. London-Vienna over Navidad y Año Nuevo. (Christmas.) Ryanair but beggars can’t be choosers. I actually like Ryanair’s efficiency and don’t need much luggage. ¿Quién dijo que las tarifas baratas se han ido para siempre?

ie you can still get £15 tickets.

When I looked, only the London one was included
