The new InterContinental Bucharest hotel is now open

A year after pulling out of its original high rise Bucharest property (now rebranded as Grand Hotel Bucharest), the InterContinental brand is back in Romania.

The InterContinental Athenee Palace Bucharest hotel opened on Monday.

This not a new hotel, far from it. It originally opened in 1914, originally in art nouveau style but with its exteriors later reimagined in art deco.

Following a massive refurbishment in the 1990’s, the hotel was managed by Hilton for 25 years until an overnight rebrand this week.

There are reports that some of the rooms were renovated in 2021 but it isn’t clear exactly what work has been done to bring it up to InterContinental standards. It is operated by the same group that runs the existing Crowne Plaza Bucharest. Rates are currently very low with rooms from €136 per night.

We stayed at the Athenee Palace in December just before the handover… All room and public area refurbishment and is complete and to a very high standard. Staff are great and continue under the new IHC management that have been there for the past month as part of the handover. It’s in a decent location too. Well worth a visit – not for me though as it’s no longer a Hilton 🙁

    HI Rob,
I’ve stayed in both the old Intercontinental (lovely place with wonderful staff – they gave me a Suite as an Ambassador even though I flew in at 9pm and had to leave at 8am the following morning!!!) and the Athenee which is Art Deco heaven and has an amazing ground floor cafe. Very pleased this is now the Intercontinental and next time I’m back in Bucharest I’m definitely going to stay there.

Think with the high energy charges we will see more Hotels charging for admission to the pool which is preferable to the water being cold, an experience a friend of mine had over Christmas. As he said you could almost see the icebergs forming!

    • Jack says:

if they cannot afford to run it without penny pinching and making guests pay on top, then perhaps it should be closed. The hotel rooms will make most of the money and energy prices have fallen hugely. Big companies like Hilton do not have a excuse really

      • Thegasman says:

When you say big companies like Hilton, do you realise they don’t own >95% of Hilton branded properties? They’re essentially a marketing/sales department for hotel owners. If a pool/leisure complex isn’t in brand standards then they won’t be interested in any complaints.

Hilton Glasgow is managed by Hilton, or was, I don’t know if Hilton extended the lease or it will be deflagged?

  • Diydegsy says:

We too stayed in the old Intercontinental and were upgraded to a suite. The staff were lovely so we were disappointed when it changed hands so this time we stayed in The Marmorosch the new Marriott on points, fantastic value. What a beautiful building and the bar in the “vault” was excellent especially the cocktails but it’s not opened every day. The only thing missing was an outside seating area for summer time etc but we were told they are looking to do something with that. Next time we go to Bucharest we will try the new Intercontinental for comparison and hope the staff are just as good. Anyone who hasn’t been to Bucharest give it a try it’s a fantastic city you won’t be disappointed.

    • Jack says:

I have always wanted to go to Bucharest and plan to in the summer, is there any tips you would have of good places to go eat etc 🙂 . The old IC sounds lovely cannot wait to check out the new one

      • lumma says:

In the old town Caru’ ce bere should be an absolute tourist trap but it’d actually really nice and good value with a stunning interior.

If you like craft beer, there’s a place called Beer Station nearby I really liked.

  • AJA says:

This charging to use the pool is a slippery downward slope. And having to book a slot to use the facility is even worse. Not good at all.

Just increase the room rate to cover the running expenses.

    • Mike Hunt says:

I for one would prefer a diving board rather than “ a slippery downward slope”

      • Chrisasaurus says:

The pool at the holiday inn gosforth park has a slope which renders the pool entirely useless for swimming and I have no idea what they were thinking

    • Lady London says:

Is the Hilton taking a decision not to socialize the costs of pool maintenance across all guests? many of whom would not use the pool.

Or is this just a money gouge?

  • BuildBackBetter says:

I dont use the pool much and am happy the headline prices are kept low and I am not subsidising the pool users.

    • Kris says:

I only use a hand towel when showering rather than a bath towel. Can I pay less?

      • Chrisasaurus says:

I’m happy to reuse my teaspoon and I don’t drink alcohol so trust I won’t be subsidising bar staff?

  • ianM says:

Used the Glasgow Hilton a lot, very good for conferences and meetings. If they keep the rates low by charging when you use the pool then fine with me.

  • Lloyd says:

Hilton Doubletree Chester also charge for the pool, think it was £10 per person or £15 for a couple if my memory is correct. I think you also had to book a slot in advance there too. I was told that the spa is fantastic, but I refuse to visit when I am a guest at the hotel and am charged to use the pool.
