Qatar Airways to replace Emirates as F1’s airline sponsor – use Avios for tickets?

SportBusiness has an exclusive story on Qatar Airways replacing Emirates as the official airline partner of Formula 1.

To quote:

Qatar Airways is set to be announced as the new airline sponsor of Formula 1, nearly doubling the fee paid by previous incumbent Emirates to secure the rights.

SportBusiness understands the state-owned flag carrier has agreed a deal to become a top-tier F1 Global Partner from the start of the 2023 season, with the deal expected to be announced ahead of the first race in Bahrain from March 3-5.

Qatar Airways to replace Emirates as F1's airline sponsor

I asked the Qatar Airways PR team in Doha if they could confirm the story but they refused to comment either way.

It sounds plausible, because Qatar has signed a 10-year deal with Formula 1 to host annual races from this year.

The reason I mention this is that Emirates has historically offered great value Paddock Club hospitality packages for Emirates Skywards miles.

You were never going to get a bargain for the British Grand Prix, but for anyone willing to head to some of the lower profile European races there were deals to be had. I know one reader paid just over 100,000 Emirates Skywards miles for 2 x 3-day Paddock Club hospitality packages for a European race last year.

At present Qatar Airways does not have ‘experiences’ redemptions. If they decided to launch them – and obviously having Formula 1 tickets to dish out is a good base to start from – this would be good news now that Qatar Privilege Club has adopted Avios as its currency.

A data point for you: IHG, don’t waste a stay here in Malta. The development around Malta is really haphazard, ugly, ill thought-out and random. Also the hotel is not really all that. We have a garden view suite, the balconies of the rooms are directly attached to the next balconies of the rooms next door, and we feel close to everyone else and then the front desk service is nervous. It isn’t 5 star at all and there is an overpowering male smell being pumped out in all areas. I’m not sure Malta is for me generally, but this is beyond that reluctance. I’m diamond amb and have an upgrade arranged, which they keep mentioning as if that has a relevance to my stay- it is making me feel uncomfortable with my guest. The minibar is “fill on request” which seems odd to me, I’ve never experienced that before. The hotel currently costs 95euro, but acting as if it’s 450plus. Wouldn’t recommend at all. For a new hotel it doesn’t look fabulous, there is rust visible on balconies. Its a sea facing room, The sea is 400-500metres away fyi

By IHG do you mean the Intercontinental? If so that’s good insight, I was about to book there!

      • G says:

To offer an alternative view, we had a garden facing suite at the Intercontinental Malta also and although the room had some niggles, it was the lounge and the service of the lounge reception that made our stay. For example we asked if we could microwave some food for our little one – about 20 mins later the lounge assistant manager turns up with a microwave for us to keep in our room for the duration of our stay.

“…overpowering male smell being pumped out in all areas”

    What does that even mean?
