Luton Airport’s DART train to launch on 10th March

One particularly frustrating aspect of flying from Luton Airport is the fact that anyone arriving by train must get on a connecting shuttle bus to the terminal building.

Even worse, the shuttle bus isn’t free unless your train ticket is to ‘Luton Airport’. Anyone with a ticket to ‘Luton Parkway Station’ needs to pay an additional £2.40 one-way.

Luton DART airport transit

Council-owned Luton Rising, which owns the airport, finally realised this was a problem. In 2016 it announced it was building an automated people-mover to shuttle passengers from the train station to the terminal. Called Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit), it was supposed to open in 2021.

That didn’t happen, of course. Finally, however, we have a date.

(King Charles got an early ride when he visited back in December.)

DART will have a soft opening on Friday 10th March.

By ‘soft opening’, we mean that the system will be running for around four hours per day. The exact hours have not been announced.

During these hours, anyone with a ticket for the shuttle bus between the railway station and the airport will be encouraged to use DART at no extra cost.

This trial phase is expected to last for around three weeks, with the full opening planned for late March. The bus alternative will be removed at this point.

DART will cost £4.90 each way, which is good going for a three minute, 1.5 mile, ride. It will be free for anyone who holds a concessionary bus pass. Residents of Luton will able to travel for half price but will need to apply for tickets in advance.

If you buy a railway ticket with ‘Luton Airport’ as your final destination, it will include the cost of DART and you will not need to buy a separate ticket at Luton Airport Parkway railway station.

The quickest journey time between London St Pancras International and the airport terminal will be 32 minutes via East Midlands Railway on the twice-hourly non-stop service to Luton Airport Parkway. It will be around 40 minutes via the stopping Thameslink trains.

We look forward to giving it a go once the full service commences in late March.

£16.50 return, for a family of four who have a family railcard from London St Pancras to Luton Airport including DART connection. Four quid each….

    Really…..

I cannot understand why there are so many negative comments on this article.

Exactly, focusing on the walk-up no effort fare makes little sense to the price conscious. I paid £3.65 for Heathrow Express use last December.

That is us sorted then, should we ever want to use LUT, which is not that far away, but inaccessible by public transport.

Only flown from there once before, Cityflyer to CDG on avios, which is not going to happen again.

  • T says:

Seems to be that travellers will pay for the incompetence of a council tender and management of a project. 300million for a tiny non railway. Jokes

  • Erico1875 says:

I’m sure we paid about 50p for the metro between Sofia airport to city centre.
Also Malaga airport to end of line Fuengirola is only about 3 Euro.

4.90 for a tiny offshort train to an overcrowded airport?

    No thanks.

  • x2000traveller says:

True, air passengers should pay some of the cost involved. But they weren’t part of the decision that led to spending £300m for a rail link just over 1 mile long, that uses cable technology from Switzerland! (There must have been cheaper options, electric buses from the current stops every 4 minutes instead?)

  • Dave Gittins says:

Just travelled from Nice Airport to the SNCF Station and it’s free (thetram teavels on into the city but you have to pay for that.

Now in Genoa and the underground Metro tram is free from 10.00 – 16.00 to boost tourism.

I’ll be very, very interested to see if this funicular line (is that what it is?) will stay open in bad weather, ice, storms and potential mudslides.

TGLoyalty got it right – this line should gave gone through to the airport – Parkway Station should have been opposite the terminal building.

That would have given Luton Airport some class.

    • Londonsteve says:

Considering it’s built by Doppelmayer who spend most of their time making funicular railways for the Alps, I doubt bad weather will cause it much concern. Part of the reason for choosing a cable solution will have been the generally steep incline it has to ascend in just over a mile, presenting traction difficulties if power is sent to the wheels.
