Crowne Plaza Dubai hotel leaves IHG

The Crowne Plaza Dubai hotel is leaving IHG today.

The reason I mention it is that this hotel, on Sheikh Zayed Road opposite Emirates Towers, is one of the old Dubai stalwarts, predating most of the recent development.

The website photographs give the impression that it is underinvested, and the building itself is now ancient by Dubai standards (it opened in 1994 – image above).

Crowne Plaza Dubai leaves IHG

I think it is going to be rebranded as Millennium Plaza, with the original Millennium Plaza hotel nearby recently rebranded as Tower Plaza. Neither of these has any links to IHG or Crowne Plaza.

The far superior Crowne Plaza Festival City remains, linked to the adjacent InterContinental.

IHG is still struggling in Dubai. The new voco, now in soft opening, has finally given it a property with a bit of beach. That said, the voco website says:

“Due to the bars and beach clubs nearby, you can expect some noise in certain rooms. If you are a light sleeper, we suggest you use the ear plugs.”

….. which is not really what you expect to see.

Stayed at the Crowne Plaza Dubai last month. It was definitely very dated. Not sad to see it leave IHG. The Crowne Plaza Marina on the other hand was great!

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

I tried staying at the CP Dubai Festival City for £90 before a 7am flight, but at check in they walked me….to the adjoining Intercontinental and gave me an enourmous multi-room suite. I’ve never had that experience before, of being upgraded entirely out of the booked hotel.

  • Dominic says:

    Wear earplugs?!

You’d expect a review to say that, not the hotel itself…

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

So glad I cancelled my stay at the new Hilton Palm 2 doors down from the Voco (and even closer to the influencer habitat known as Five Dubai). I made a reconaissance visit there last November for dinner and did not appreciate the West Beach vibe at all, nor the loud drinking going on around the Hilton’s sole pool. What with the new Marriott that sits between Hilton and Voco asserting its ‘resort’ status to skip out of certain elite benefits, I think West Beach is generally to be avoided. I’m at the Waldorf Palm now which is much quieter but the taxi drivers drive like maniacs around the Palm so this has been a little too far out for me as someone who gets car sick.

      • NorthernLass says:

Yes, glad I went for Grosvenor House, I was looking at the new Hilton but it’s already got a couple of poor reviews on TA.

      • AndyF says:

I had a fantastic experience at the Waldorf Palm. Very good clientele young respectful families, loads of baby mooners, which we were at the time. We will return with our young child we felt it was a good hotel for it and the family pool was excellent. I’m also tempted by the nearby Waldorf Ras Al Khaimah.
As a side note the nearby shopping mall at the palm. I wasn’t that impressed with the shops, it’s mainly for dining The fountains are worth seeing. We sat at a great Mexican restaurant at the end of the east side it had a great vibe but we were absolutely shocked at the prices for what it was.

        • Rob says:

I’ve stayed 3x at Waldorf Palm, albeit two of those were 2-3 days. The site is a little small when 100% full (fewer sunbeds than guests, basically) but you’re generally ok. Waldorf Ras is marginally better and a lot cheaper but there’s nothing to do outside the resort – albeit if that’s not an issue you will be very happy in Ras.

        • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

The nearby shopping area of The Pointe? It really is just dining. The Nakheel mall has opened on the trunk of the Palm now and is more akin to a proper mall. The St Regis is attached to it.

          • TGLoyalty says:

Was going to say doesn’t sound like the mall to me.

Taco Tuesday at the Mexican was better value

Also check the entertainer app to make eating and drinking in Dubai a bit more palatable

        • Mr Benjamin Murphy-Ryan says:

Agree Waldorf Palm is great – stayed twice this year, but they do let weekend day guests in who are generally louder, more drunk and obnoxious – so just be mindful.

        • Mr Benjamin Murphy-Ryan says:

WA Rak is great too – it’s got a good range of rooms and cheaper than palm – if going for pool etc it’s great. Mall nearby is small and generic, but we will defo consider visiting again

        • mvcvz says:

          What’s a “baby mooner” please?

          • Rob says:

The holiday you go on before you have a baby.

          • DaveJ says:

“The holiday you go on before you have a baby.”

            So a holiday then?

          • Rob says:

Holiday with a heavily pregnant partner.

          • Andyf says:

It was a holiday with a heavily pregnant partner. Every other women we saw I think was pregnant including my wife there. It was one of the places we found where Zika wasn’t an issue. It’s something to still consider.

      • TGLoyalty says:

Can’t say I saw any bad drinking behaviour at the pool or heard any excess noise from my suite at Hilton the palm

A pleasant 5 night stay. I followed that with 2 nights at GH which is still the best property in a Dubai for me

        • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Horrified at the Waldorf this morning to see a man swan around the buffet barefoot. A glass had been smashed only yesterday.

          • Gordon says:

Perhaps it was the head of housekeeping making sure the glass had been adequately cleared up?

  • James says:

Do you get breakfast or good cancellation terms with Hyatt redemptions?

    • Matt says:

Only for SLH properties unless you have Hyatt Globalist status

  • BSI1978 says:

Shame about the Andaz Liverpool, was already quite more expensive than the other Hyatt options in the City, albeit I understand it’s a different product.

Will be interesting to see where this places the Park if and when it finally opens (although it seems to have disappeared completely from the app…..)

    • TGLoyalty says:

Andaz London really isn’t worth the money or points.

      • Rizz says:

Agree, I find this Andaz to be dated and depressing. Light years behind properties like Rosewood or Shangri-La which are my favorite hotels close to the City.

      • BSI1978 says:

Largely agree on this, hence why my last few bookings have been via Emyr and a couple of those attracted the £250/£100 spend/rebate!

  • F says:

Great memories of Crowne Plaza from the mid 90s it was quite a destination then and the nostalgia in me loved that that little Italian restaurant at the top of the escalators never changed..

  • Gordon says:

Wow….Ziva and Zilara Dominican Republic increases from 25,000 to 40,000 points, stayed at Ziva D.R. as covid struck we were the only European’s and it was only 5% capacity.
Save your money and stay next door at secrets which is now part of the Hyatt group, Just as good, Returning in June.

  • Bagoly says:

IHG Business: I made a dummy booking, stopped when card number required.
It seemed to allow me to book for myself.

  • Ian S says:

If you’re sharing a room with your partner can one of you get the booking points and the other get the room points by whoever books it booking in their partner’s name?
