NEW AVIOS ROUTES: British Airways returns to Sharm El Sheikh and extends Malta

Two new British Airways routes have just been added, and they are available now for Avios bookings.

First up is Egypt. British Airways is returning to Sharm El Sheikh this Winter.

This will be a London Gatwick route. Flights start on 3rd November and there will be four flights per week initially, dropping down to three per week from December.

Sharm El Sheikh

It is a day flight in both directions, leaving Gatwick at 8am (lands 3.20pm) and leaving Sharm at 4.20pm (lands 8pm).

Flights will initially operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

There is a snag though … British Airways is operating this flight on a short haul A320 aircraft.

The outbound flight has a ‘block time’ of 5 hours and 20 minutes. The inbound flight is blocked at 5 hours and 50 minutes.

This is a l-o-n-g time to spend on an A320 in Economy, given the leg room on British Airways short haul aircraft. Leg room isn’t much better in Business, of course, but at least you have the empty middle seat.

One upside is that this will be a relatively cheap way to pick up 80 tier points each way in Business in British Airways Executive Club.

Avios and cash seats are now bookable on ba.com.

Malta British Airways

Gatwick to Malta flights are now loaded for the Winter

The second ‘new’ route is the loading of Malta flights from London Gatwick for the Winter 2023 season, ie November onwards.

Flights operate six days per week, with Wednesday being the odd one out.

Like Sharm, Malta also offers 160 tier points for a return flight in Club Europe. Remember that this would double to 320 tier points if you booked via BA Holidays and stayed for 5+ nights before the end of the year.

Again, Avios and cash seats are now bookable at ba.com.

  • Amy C says:

Wow, didn’t see that coming. Wish they’d start earlier, like Sept or Oct. Red Sea too chilly for me over winter. Then there’s the ridiculous tiny tier points for Cairo/Sharm 😡

    • NorthernLass says:

And the crazy avios pricing for 5 hours+ in CE, like CAI, I imagine!
But it’s a hugely popular LCC route so presumably people don’t mind too much about the leg room, per se.

      • Amy C says:

Just tried to see what CE prices are and keep getting a message saying they don’t have any flights. Economy coming up a shade under £400.

      • Tariq says:

Is it still just a single meal service for a long CE flight like this?

    • Joseph King says:

      That’s what she said!

  • Richmond_Surrey says:

Good news. EasyJet and Wizzair using shorthaul aircrafts too. At least times are decent.

  • Pete M says:

Just as I booked a return with EZ after NY 🤣 But at least we get to enjoy the luxury of dense CE to Cairo on the outbound 🙄

  • NorthernLass says:

Row 1 on EZ with a ham and cheese sourdough toastie can be better than CE!
OH is an avid diver so I checked pricing on direct flights and both EZ and Tui are charging around £600 return from MAN in September so no wonder BA thinks there is profit to be made on this route.

    • PeteM says:

Indeed, that’s what we have booked – €314pp one way! Wizz was cheaper but not something I’m willing to risk, to be honest…

    • Rizz says:

      A prime example of “greedflation”.

  • Simonbr says:

Presumably 80 TP will only be possible to/from SSH if they are able to offer a Club cabin?

    • PeteM says:

      Of course they will!

    • Rob says:

They are – it is bookable for Avios. Some IT issue seems to be blocking it for cash on some flights (or there is a group booking.)

  • Chris H says:

Talking about new routes, can anyone help me with info on Bangkok?
First, is there any news on IF it will be returning as a direct route for BA?
If not, where can I get info on if it is LIKELY to be returning?
Thanks everyone who takes the time to reply.

    • Richie says:

Lots of info in the forums on this.

      • chrishors says:

I can’t find anything in the Forums newer than Apr 2022 about LHR to Bangkok flights.
I’ve searched, but maybe you can help direct me to some more recent relevant information?
        Please!
I have booked LHR in Oct to Honk Kong and back again in Nov on a 241 reward voucher, and will then have to arrange transfers each way. I have waited up until now to see if they re-introduce the flights direct, so I don’t have to do the transfers. But how long to wait?

        • PeteM says:

The general consensus is it’s very unlikely BA will return to Bangkok any time soon. The route doesn’t make enough money, they don’t have enough planes and there’s too much competition.

          • chrishors says:

Thank you both. That link, Richie, currently has a question like mine, but no answers yet.
Your answer Pete, is what I am thinking, but I would be so p*ssed if I booked internal flights, none refundable, and then they suddenly announced they were going to start again.

  • Aston100 says:

On our visit to Sharm back in maybe 2014, we got hassled by guys riding on camels outside our resort.
I think they’d been taught by some Essex prankster. With uncanny cockney accents one kept spamming “oi oi saveloy, bangers and mash, bangers and mash” and the other said “Geezer, d’ya wanna touch me camel toe?”.
Really not a lot you can say to that.

    • Bobby says:

Went diving in Hurghada and the instructors were all saying ‘lavverly jabbly’. 😅

  • Tracey says:

So TLV is the shortest long haul route and SSH the longest short haul?
