NEW AVIOS ROUTES: British Airways returns to Sharm El Sheikh and extends Malta

Two new British Airways routes have just been added, and they are available now for Avios bookings.

First up is Egypt. British Airways is returning to Sharm El Sheikh this Winter.

This will be a London Gatwick route. Flights start on 3rd November and there will be four flights per week initially, dropping down to three per week from December.

Sharm El Sheikh

It is a day flight in both directions, leaving Gatwick at 8am (lands 3.20pm) and leaving Sharm at 4.20pm (lands 8pm).

Flights will initially operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

There is a snag though … British Airways is operating this flight on a short haul A320 aircraft.

The outbound flight has a ‘block time’ of 5 hours and 20 minutes. The inbound flight is blocked at 5 hours and 50 minutes.

This is a l-o-n-g time to spend on an A320 in Economy, given the leg room on British Airways short haul aircraft. Leg room isn’t much better in Business, of course, but at least you have the empty middle seat.

One upside is that this will be a relatively cheap way to pick up 80 tier points each way in Business in British Airways Executive Club.

Malta British Airways

Gatwick to Malta flights are now loaded for the Winter

The second ‘new’ route is the loading of Malta flights from London Gatwick for the Winter 2023 season, ie November onwards.

Flights operate six days per week, with Wednesday being the odd one out.

Like Sharm, Malta also offers 160 tier points for a return flight in Club Europe. Remember that this would double to 320 tier points if you booked via BA Holidays and stayed for 5+ nights before the end of the year.

    I’ve just paid £1300 to EasyJet for 2 return tickets to Hurghada in June for a dive trip so pricing for BA is about right. I’ve never been so pained entering my card details to pay

      Yep, Sharm & Hurghada are horrendous prices at the moment.

      if you like diving would highly recommend Oman as well, some of the best diving I have experienced. Can dive either just outside Muscat, or head up to Khasab.

    Such a shame they insist on CE & ET on the Egypt routes though.
    Used to love the ex-BMI throne seats to Cairo.

    If you can afford to fly via the ME3 or Jordan. I would do it. I have done BA in Y and J to CAI, and the seats are so thin and hard for 5hrs. The flight team knows this is a terrible setup for such a long flight. So many Americans in J couldn’t understand how BA offered a flight 2hrs shorter than flying in from JFK, such a rubbish setup, and had to keep apologising.

    Y is terrible, especially as they don’t take on enough food for the return. So even if you preorder and want more food 4hrs into your flight, there is F all left. At least it’s consistent with all BA flights 😉

      Those American tourists in J may be complaining but their compatriots in Y would know that the vast majority of transcon flights in the US are longer than this and use 737s or A320s. Same with flights to Central and South America – for example Miami to Lima on AA is 6 hours and uses A320.

      As a fun fact, LHR has what allegedly is the second longest A320-operated flight in the world, Tashkent-Heathrow on Uzbekistan Airways, with flight time of just under 8 hours (!)

          Just a regular US “First” product: 2×2 seating with more spacious seats; absolutely horrible food; no lounge access on domestic even with highest status.

          No difference in Y, except for a bag of free pretzels.

            Sorry that just isn’t true – the seats on US First is far superior to BA. ALL I care about is the seat on a 5 hour flight.

    Being honest, when I saw the headline, I thought this article may have been an April Fools. There are several competitors offering equivalent service (and cramped short haul seats) at a lower price than BA.

    Will the BA flights land and depart from Terminal 1, the more modern Terminal, or Terminal 2, the more basic Terminal?
