New British Airways safety video launched

After three years of manual demonstrations, British Airways is finally bringing back their safety video.

During covid, additional steps were required when wearing face masks and using oxygen masks in an emergency. This meant that the previous safety video could not be used and cabin crew had to give manual instructions.

Now that on-board face masks are no longer required, BA is returning to pre-recorded safety videos. The new video features employees from across the airline as well as some more recognisable faces, such as Emma Raducanu, Ncuti Gatwa and, oddly, Robert Peston.

New British Airways safety video

It replaces the previous Chabuddy G safety videos which were a bit like Marmite …..

Click the image above to be taken to YouTube to watch.

The video clocks in at just a hair over five minutes, but it is well worth watching. As an avowed hater of the previous Chabuddy G videos, which I thought were far too try hard, this feels much more authentic. I like how snappy it is, with clever editing to keep things moving.

Unlike the old video, which relied on its cast of A-listers for relevance, this video tries to be interesting in its own right, and largely succeeds. Although I do feel for poor Tom Kerridge, who didn’t get the sexiest lines to read ….

The video will launch on flights from 1st May. A second version of this video will follow shortly afterwards, featuring the staff in the new uniforms unveiled in January.

  • Jordan D says:

As a fan of the Flying Start Safety videos, I chuckled every time Chhabuddy G made his “don’t be so hard on yourself” joke at Jess Glynne.

The new video is good, but it’s no #ThankYouGillian.

  • Joe says:

I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since I’ve had to sit through Chabuddy G. I feel so haunted by the cringe of it that it still feels I watched it on my last flight.

  • Andrew J says:

Although Oswald Boateng himself features in the video, his new uniforms do not, which surprised me as that will quickly date the video.

    • Lewis says:

Read the article “The video will launch on flights from 1st May. A second version of this video will follow shortly afterwards, featuring the staff in the new uniforms unveiled in January.”

      • Andrew J says:

Why wait until January when the new uniforms are being worn from this spring – will date the video by the summer.

        • Rhys says:

I think you’re missing the point. The video with new uniforms will roll out once the new uniforms are being worn….

          • Andrew J says:

Which will be from this spring, so January seems rather a long time away.

          • Rhys says:

No, the uniforms were unveiled in January. The v2 video will come once the uniforms are rolled out (this summer supposedly)

          • Anouj says:

for a airline that cuts corners a lot it does seem surprising they went to the effort and cost of making the video twice instead of just delaying the release till the new uniforms were rolled out..

    • Jack says:

they have made another version of this video which will be released in the summer when the new uniforms come out

  • Alex G says:

    ‘Oddly, Robert Peston’

I will recognise Robert Preston, and would know it was him with my eyes closed.

I’ve heard of Emma Raducanu, but haven’t a clue what she looks like.

    Never heard of Ncuti Gatwa.

    • The Original David says:

Robert Peston was the only one I recognised! Either BA has gone down a notch on the “celebrities”, or I’m more out of touch than I used to be… At least that will keep the video interesting to watch dozens of times, as I try to figure out who’s who. Is the gang of giggling youths anyone special or just kids from the local council estate?

    • Rob says:

      Dr Who!

    • vlcnc says:

I think some people are showing their age here 😛

  • Scott says:

Flicked through about 20secs of that, and that’s enough for me.
Unfortunately got a BA flight on the 1st May, so may have to endure this.

I would prefer it if thry could just show what needs to be be shown in a clear and consise manner rather than wheeling out “celebs” or making it Woke and gimmicky.

    • Nick says:

      +1

    • BSI1978 says:

Having “flicked through about 20 secs” of the video, what was it in particular that makes you describe it as Woke and gimmicky?

    • Jeff says:

Out of interest, what is the opposite of ‘woke’?

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Not woke = ignorant of social justice issues (which is far more than just racism)

        • Jeff says:

‘Not woke’ needs a proper adjective, though. “Snoozy” maybe? Thought there’d be one already.

For the noun, I’ve heard the people referred to as ‘Me-mes’, as in “ME don’t like foreigners” and “there’s nothing wrong with Brexit and even if there was it’s nothing to do with ME”.

I suppose “Personal Responsibility Duckers” is a bit too long?

    • Catalan says:

@Scott. If it was shown in just a “clear and concise manner” you’d be the first to complain it was boring.
And what exactly makes it “Woke”? Because it shows black people?

      • Paul says:

Really don’t understand how the video is woke…

        • Rob says:

Has people in it who are not middle aged white men.

          • Budva says:

Goes overboard on flaunting the diversity angle

          • Rob says:

The people in it are mainly on BA’s payroll – Tom, Emma, Ozwald. I think Stephen Bartlett does stuff for BA too.

Ncuti isn’t but he will be world famous in 12 months once Dr Who launches.

          • vlcnc says:

Ncuti is already world famous, especially in the US, thanks to his stint on a very successful Netlix series 😉

    • Jack says:

what was it that made it gimmicky or woke . It features a range of people explaining in the video and is a great way of getting the key messages across

      • Kevin says:

The Safety Cards are also very inclusive. At least the one on my aircraft this morning was. It shows a picture of 3 passengers, with 3 different skin colours. It also shows what is presumably a family; a male and female who are both white, with a child who is black. Perhaps it’s not their child. Perhaps the child is adopted. Perhaps the mother had the child to a man in a previous relationship. Perhaps she had an affair. Who knows!

However, this morning I have made a more shocking discovery. The picture on the front of the safety card was of an A320neo but the aircraft was an A320ceo, NOT a neo. Unless of course it had sharklets retro-fitted, which on disembarking the aircraft, I checked, and it did not. I cannot believe BA would make such a mistake. Formal complaint has been lodged directly to Mr Doyle himself. I think I need a lie down.

  • Phillip says:

    I like it!

  • Lewis says:

It’s not bad… but maybe I’ve been out of the UK for too long; a lot of the read seems quite condescending and not particularly friendly. Also the audio mixing is pretty wild. Some lines were super loud and others hard to hear. I wonder how that’ll work onboard.

  • Andrew. says:

    Ryanair Safety Video – 2m24s
    BA Safety Video 5m03s

Maybe if the video was shorter the turnaround would be 2 minutes quicker?

    • Paul says:

Ryanair has a safety video? Didn’t know they had screens onboard!

      • Save East Coast Rewards says:

I thought the same. It would be weird if Ryanair were installing screens in their aircraft when BA removed theirs from their shorthaul aircraft a few years ago.

Means I don’t get to suffer/experience the safety video on most of my flights.

    • Andrew J says:

Safety videos are usually played during the taxi anyway so don’t affect turnaround times.

      • Alex G says:

Taxiing at Heathrow – 40 minutes.

Taxiing at Stansted – 2 minutes.

BA can have a longer video.

Personally, I like to watch the crew do the safety demonstration, and always give them my undivided attention. It’s only polite, after all.

On a flight to JFK on AA many years ago, my friend and I were in the middle row of 5 (in the days when I used to fly economy). A couple of guys at the other end of the same row were talking to each other through the safety demonstration. At the end of it, an FA came over and said to them “right, now we are going to do it all again and this time you are going to pay attention”. She gave them a personal briefing, and they paid attention.

Got to love those mature FAs on AA. You don’t mess with them. And I would rather a mature experienced woman was in charge in an emergency than some young underpaid kid.
