Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Best Western Rewards drops Avios, effective immediately

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Back in March we ran an article on how to earn Avios when staying at Best Western hotels.

We said at the time that Best Western had disappeared from the Avios hotel partners page on ba.com but that it was still on the Best Western site as an option.

No longer.

Best Western Rewards drops Avios points

Members whose accounts were set up to earn Avios instead of Best Western Rewards points were emailed yesterday to say that the partnership is over. Anyone who was set up to earn Avios will now earn Best Western Rewards points instead.

The chain does remain a Virgin Points partner. Details are on the Virgin Atlantic website here – you earn a flat 500 Virgin Points per stay.

You may want to go into your Best Western online account and change your preference from Best Western Rewards points (which is what you have now been opted into) to Virgin Points.

    Rob, Rhys or anyone else.

Are you aware of the uptake rate of these poor Marriot offers? Why bother with these deals? Surely it’s better for them to at least make them half palatable or give more of an incentive to actually stay at their properties.

    • Rob says:

It’s more complex than you think. Remember that hotels don’t get paid for redemption nights unless the hotel is full (well, a nominal sum to cover cleaning, around 0.1 cents per point). Marriott HQ pockets virtually all you pay unless you redeem on a busy night.

However, hotels clearly don’t want to see the value of points cut too low or you won’t bother staying in hotels to earn them – you just buy them instead (which is what I do with Hyatt).

      Where is the middle ground?

  • Mike says:

Since I accidentally got invoiced (and charged) by an AC Marriott when I stayed via points, I can actually give an example value. It was a charge of £17.62 per night (I stayed two nights) that should have gone to Marriott. Normally that hotel was approximately £100 per night but I can’t remember if I used points because the rate was higher than usual or some other reason…. Just checked through my account, the stay was 30,000 points per night.

IHG paid £30 to Indigo Bath when I was there – I got the receipt for that!

They cover the cost of the housekeeping unless the hotel is at capacity that night then they’ll pay a higher rate I doubt it’s rack though.
