They might well know it, but it’s in the script to read about card cancellation as it in the terms and conditions of the card, so the agent is going to read it out, whether you want them to or not, its the same as BA read out some disclosures to you when booking over the phone. I’m still surprised that there isn’t at least any partial (even 3 first character) validation on Amex, but hey it’s their network.
