@bibby135 we returned from DC last week with two younger kids. Some tips – hope these help!
1. Smithsonian Air & Space on the Mall requires pre-booking (08:30 onwards) as we found out at midday when all tickets had gone! It may be the same for some of the other museums albeit they were all free at least!
I think that’s the only one of the museums that you need to book ahead for – certainly I found at the others I visited I was able to just turn up and go in. You book a specified one hour time slot for entry if I remember rightly.
Going up the Washington monumemt also needs pre-booking and tickets go fast. They are available online 30 days in advance and sell out the same day, a second batch is available the day before you want to go, and a few on the day at 8am if you turn up. It’s only $1 reservation fee (tickets themselves are free)
