Thanks. Looks like we would fly via PEK rather than PKX. Surprisingly Mr 11 y/o who has shown no interest in any other city seems interested in “China”, so maybe we’ll do a stopover after all. What would you put on a one day itinerary with an 8 y/o and 11 y/o in tow?

I think the children will be fairly wowed even though Beijing isn’t spectacular in the way Shanghai appears, but it’s where there’s much more to see. For a one day trip, it depends on how much you are willing to pack in! The Forbidden City is huge and you must pre-book, the Temple of Heaven and the park it is in (both are close to the Wangfujing area which would be a good place to stay), the Bell Tower and Drum Tower (next to each other) and the surrounding hutongs are some of the main sights to aim for unless you prefer temples – eg Lama Temple. You will still have time for Beijing duck and all the other great food to be found.
