Personally, I’d send them to Marriott. Lots of airline transfer options from there if you find the need to top an account up, and also lots of decent hotels in most parts of the world. Easy to merge Marriott balances with friends and relatives too which can be handy.

Best is leave them with Amex via another MR card, but make sure they link the accounts and do so properly. My last two MR cards resulted in new MR accounts, and one account merger had the effect of breaking points earning.
