At least banks give advance notice to their customers before undertaking routine maintenance – until their IT fails completely!
Or they don’t and their systems just fall over as happened to Barclays on Friday and continued over the weekend. Fortunately I didn’t need to access the Barclays app or the website and just used Amex to pay for shopping.
The banks are also an example of how trying to move from an ancient computer system to a newer one can be a hugely painful experience – the failures TSB experienced in 2019 for example made any issues with BA’s IT seem minor in comparison. I fully expect as BA modernise their IT that we will see more issues, and regular outages for upgrades are certain to be needed.
