@Iainm thanks for the info. I assume you use the exact 241 voucher on your outbound but if I may ask if it is on BA or IB? I am trying to add an IB inbound flight and EZY to EDI. The plan is book full avios on BA site and call in to ask for 50% avios refund.
I booked madrid to Santiago on day 355 using voucher, the return 2 weeks later both at midnight, using BA site but flying on IB. Called ba for refund on the voucher a day later. Then booked lon to Madrid on BA as reward flight saver (50 pence each one way) (in economy as im BA Silver)and did not link that flight to the 2 4 1 to eliminate any chance of being stung for uk tax. As for return from madrid I’m pricing up cash fare home from madrid on BA as the price is very reasonable(circa 70 quid in the cheap seats) so not worth the 23500 avios for both of us, but I guess I could link the last leg to the voucher if I could be bothered! 🤣
The iberia lon madrid flight ( very appealing if you book the right aircraft and cabin, u can get a lie flat to madrid from london) seemed more expensive at the time both in terms of cost and avios.

@Vit I used the BA 241. Searched both flights on the BA site with Madrid as the start/end point. If it was a straight return I could have booked it there and then and got the correct Avios and tax/charges flight. As it was an open Jaw I had to phone BA. They could book the flight back to Madrid okay as part of one booking, but their system couldn’t find a way to only charge me the Iberia level of Avios and taxes/charges (the latter was the difference between £400 and about £1800!!).
They told me to make two separate bookings via BA site, one using 241 then call them to have 50% of Avios refunded for return flight. So I would say your plan to book return then call for refund will definitely be okay.
As an aside on the practice of having to book redemptions separately. My experience looking to book on an Iberia flight (via BA site) is that there is lots of availability in and out. That might be just because more people haven’t cottoned on to the benefit of using Iberia yet of course.

Sorry to understand. You booked MAD-SCL with 241 one way.
2 weeks later at midnight you booked SCL-MAD and paid FULL Avios for one way flight.
The next day you called to add second flight added to first booking thus getting 50% off your Avios back?
Is that right?

Yes, got the 50% avios back. Very easy and a total bargain, given the flights retail at circa 4k
