Forums Payment cards American Express Amex Plat sign up bonus – already supplementary

  • 9 posts

Hi, I’m currently a supplementary holder on my partners Amex platinum and I read the HFP article saying that as long as I have not held one myself in the past 24 months I would be eligible for a sign up bonus myself. However on both chat and on the phone with Amex they said I am ineligible as I currently have a platinum card in my name – despite it being my partner’s account. Can anyone help clarifying this with Amex, perhaps if you could direct me to something on the Amex website please?

They’re wrong. If you want the card, then just apply. You don’t need to contact them first.

Thanks for the reply Scott – do you know if there is anything on the Amex website mentioning this, just in case there are any problems with the sign up bonus please?

If you have ever held a card as the main account holder and have just finished your two year wait period (and Amex is insisting you’re not eligible for points), then maybe just wait a little while longer to apply.

This is because when a cardholder instructs Amex to close an account, and when Amex actually closes an account are two different dates.

If you’ve never held a card as the main account holder, then the above will not apply to you 🙂

Thanks, Amex are saying to me that because I’m a supplementary platinum cardholder I’m not eligible for a sign up bonus – despite never having a platinum card before.

And therefore I’d had to get my partner to cancel my Amex supp card, wait 24 months and then apply for my own plat card to get a sign up bonus – which seems to contradict the article on HFP about supplementary cards not counting?

No, that’s nonsense, which is more and more what comes from Amex agents these days. Have a look at Rob’s articles on the Amex cards, which clearly explain the rules.

Thanks I thought as much – Rob’s article mentions that I would be eligible for a SUB as a supplementary cardholder but Amex saying otherwise. Just worried I wouldn’t have any “proof” from Amex themselves if I need to chase the sign up bonus.

    Summary:

Supplementary cards – do not count
    Your own cards: count

If you have never held a card as a MAIN account holder, then ignore Amex’s advice and apply for the card.
If you have ever held a card as a MAIN account holder, check your records then apply after you are completely satisfied that the two year+ waiting period has elapsed.

Thank you for the clear summary – can the 2 year+ waiting period be as soon as 2 years + a day?

    Exactly this.
I got told the same load of bollocks by the Philippines call centre about the SUB on an Amex Plat because I am a supplementary card holder on Mrs Aston’s ARCC (so not even a Platinum card).

    – As long as there isn’t anything significant / relevant that you haven’t revealed to us, you should be fine.

I wouldn’t risk it. I doubt anyone here would either.
Give it a couple of weeks after the date that Amex tell you. Do note the time & date of that conversation.

Sorry you were told the same but thankful it’s not just me!

Appreciate the advice – will give it a few weeks and then apply, will come back here if any issues!

Very frustrating that they give you rubbish info – happens more and more. I wouldn’t trust anything I am told, which is unfortunate, especially when it really matters.
