Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

    Hi all (again)

Sorry to be a pain but I’ve just noticed something. I did an Avios booking on phone:
    MAN-LHR/LGW-MRU in Premium
    MRU-LGW/LHR-MAN in Business
    (all off peak)

The reason I did it on phone was the LHR-MAN was not yet released and didn’t want to lose the J seats so I did a MAN-MRU-LON and then added the final sector.

Cutting a long story short they charged me 197250 miles. I just did a dummy booking online, exact same itin and the cost is 187500 – a difference of 9750 miles, which (not randomly) equates to a MAN-LHR.

So I am of the belief that they have charged me miles for that sector in error (to be clear when I added the last sector they didn’t charge me any more so the error was on the original booking).

Question is, do I have any recourse here? Call and ask to recalc or am I asking for trouble for the sake of 9750 miles? I’m not that bothered but also 9750 miles is 9750 miles.

    Cheers

    Alex

There shouldn’t be a charge (avios or cash) for the domestic leg – have you checked that BA has tagged it on to your original booking and not made a separate one?

It’s all on the same ticket but as I say the charge is 197250 on the ticket instead of 187500 per my dummy booking. So I’m sure 187500 is right.

Call and ask for a recalc

Just have and they guy just fobbed me off. Said it was peak. Ive just checked and none of my dates are.

He also then claimed the issue might be a mixed class as Lon-Mru is Premium and MAN-Lon is economy (obviously).

Might be a case of try again…

Neither of those would be the reason anyway – the connection should be free regardless of peak/off peak.

Also a tip for the future, if you’re booking your inbound and the domestic leg is available, you can use the “stopover” tool and select CE for the connection, if there are avios seats available. It means you get the benefits like lounge access at LHR etc.

Thanks @NorthernLass. I called again and this time they were very helpful and did confirm I got charged for the domestic so they refunded the miles and a grand total of £1. I guess that’s a good tip – if your cash element is 50p/£1 more than the usual cash element, they have charged domestic separately.

Great tip re:connection. Thankfully return is in J anyway. I suppose I could look to do that outbound too to use the lounge in MAN but it’s not worth the miles and change fee!

Annoying to see this happen yet again with BA – agents just making something up off the top of their heads as an explanation if they don’t know the answer. Not sure why this happens so frequently with BA and I’m not aware of any other companies that just make stuff up like this…!

BA must have made millions over the years by fobbing off unsuspecting customers with made up rules, untrue excuses etc.
