BA claims bad weather for refusal to pay compensation

My son was recently due to travel between Heathrow and Dublin as part of a connecting flight from Tokyo. His flight was cancelled and he was rebooked the next day, about 18 hours later. He claimed for expenses and compensation. They paid the expenses but refused compensation on the basis on bad weather. The weather was good in both Heathrow and Dublin on the day. We are looking for some advice on how he should respond.

The weather looking out of the window is quite immaterial. Of course it’s possible that BA is making it up, but the weather might have affected an earlier rotation of the aircraft (so potentially legitimate ‘extraordinary circumstances’) or the weather might have caused knock on delays from an earlier event. There are lots of possibilities. You can challenge BA to provide evidence, but they probably won’t but the onus is on them to do so if they wish to claim ‘extraordinary circumstances’ so you can take it to CEDR to whom they will either have to provide such evidence or lose. Obviously, you are claiming the long haul compensation of £520.
