This is today’s chat thread.
If you have specific questions about Avios, hotels or credit cards, please ask them in the appropriate forum and not here. This thread is a good place to post interesting deals you have spotted or your general thoughts on travel and all things miles and points. Thank you for contributing.
Hi all,
I have a roundtrip I am trying to book for my mother-in-law to join the rest of our family (already booked) on a flight from KIX to KUL on Malaysia Airlines (MH). Using BA Exec, I found space on the flight (only economy sadly) and the price was ~40,000 Avios plus a hefty £210 (The cash price of the flight is £485). I could not see this seat appear on the online searches on either AA or Qatar (and didn’t try on Finnair). I see other dates on Qatar for the same flight (which are a non-starter), but the taxes are less than half.
Is there any chance I can get this flight on any other carrier that uses Avios to bring the taxes down? By calling them on the phone?
Sorry, my points game has suffered after a long 5 year gap of no travel (babies), so trying to get back into it.
Thanks!
Any experiences on how long it takes to transfer Accor all to Club Eurostar.. official timeline is up to six weeks.. thanks
Good afternoon from the Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort. Tahiti is not the easiest place to get to from the UK on a redemption but well worth the effort once you get here (we flew Air France from LAX using flying blue miles). Next stop will be the recently opened Westin in Bora Bora (formerly Le Meridien). Surprisingly, they’ve already accepted my NUA upgrade request.
Morning all,
Been a while since I’ve changed money before going abroad so looking for some thoughts on any points angle on changing around £700 of GBP to CAD. Other than looking for the best rate through comparisons websites, any other suggestions?

Since you want everyone together on one specific flight, I feel this is one of those times when you book asap with cash.
@jumpersforgoalposts If you’re flying out of Heathrow Travelex online are not necessarily the best but usually pretty good, and offer a buy back option for a few quid which can be well worth while. You can also get a slightly better rate using a Heathrow Rewards number, although I seem to remember you may have to start via the Heathrow website to do that.

Consider a Thomas Exchange Global store.

I second that

Thank you! If I collect in store and pay with Amex/Barclays Avios, do you know if it will charge me cash advance?
Yes – don’t pay for currency with a credit card, you’ll likely be charged a cash advance fee plus daily interest.
If you have Curve you could withdraw cash and use that to pay for your currency.
I 3rd the Thomas Global exchange and hopefully there is one not too far from the poster,
TBH I’d avoid travelex like the plague and look to a normal high street bureau de change, your bank or even somewhere like FairFx which do a postal service. These are likely to have far better rates.
But do you really need that much physical cash?
If there’s a NM/Eurochange outlet nearby they are usually fairly good on the rate. They’re often in shopping centres and the like.
Load the money onto a Wise card, then you just use the card and it changes what you need when you need it. The rate is excellent and you don’t have foreign currency left at the end of your trip. If you need some cash you can use the card in an ATM locally.
I did specifically say Travelex Online earlier – they are currently offering CAD at 1.8004 compared to 1.8005 at Thomas Global. For the convenience of collecting at the airport you’d have to be pretty desperate to consider the difference to be worth an extra trip anywhere.
Wouldn’t touch Travelex as a walk up at the airport of course, that is a completely different ball game.
Don’t go into a physical FX store first. Use someone like Ace FX or Best Foreign Exchange. You book the trade online and then go collect from a big chain store, rates are much better than direct from the counter.
That is assuming you’re in London
Global have just announced that they are selling tickets for two ‘inaugural VIP flights’ from Glasgow and Manchester to JFK in May 😳.
Reserve your VIP ticket – but no mention of how much. Brilliant!
While I can see the appeal of being one of the first, I’m happy to give someone else the opportunity to take one for the team!

What’s plan b if their A380 goes tech?

You’d be better directing that question at Global, whoever they are. How am I supposed to know if that have a plan B or not!?
Anyone else experiencing issues viewing their current flight bookings on BA, through the “manage my booking” section on the BA website?
It hasn’t loaded up the webpage for me all morning.

It’s just a question for anyone considering these flights.

I think it was a rhetorical question, not expecting an answer here. There are some strange ‘features’ highlighted on their website:
‘If you’re travelling in First or Business, there will be the chance to book a chauffeur driven car to the airport’ – or of course you could just book any chauffeur driven car regardless of the cabin you may fly in.
‘11000+ Destinations To Visit’ – so that’s New York and 11,000 others yet to be added to their network!

The aircraft will need to position from GLA to MAN, that might sell well if it was put on sale.

@Rhys please confirm you’re planning to be on this piece of “aviation history”
BTW it isn’t them selling flights, it’s Travelopedia Ltd chartering a Hi Fly Malta A380 . Flights will be sold with ATOL protection. Hi Fly will be on the hook if anything goes wrong but if you look at another similiar arrangement – Maleth & P&O Cruises – last I checked Maleth have not paid the UK261 compo due when they faced disruptions
