This is today’s chat thread. We have moved the daily discussion from the main HfP news feed into the new forum. We hope you get used to it.

If you have specific questions about Avios, hotels or credit cards, please ask them in the appropriate forum and not here. This thread is a good place to post interesting deals you have spotted or your general thoughts on travel and all things miles and points. Thank you for contributing.

“ Looking to pick between the 3x hotels – any recommendations?
Hilton Dubai Palm Jumeirah / Hilton Jumeriah Beach / Hilton Dubai The Walk
Edit: Deciding to replace + redeem more points and cancel the DoubleTree by Hilton all of Emirates if the above are better (double the points, so I imagine they will be)
I would be keen to know if they upgrade rooms (Gold member) or have free shuttles to popular areas. Those are bonuses for me
Also having a private beach and good places to eat”

IMO both Hilton Jumeirah and The Walk are in the seediest part of JBR Walk (hooker central) and when I have dropped in (to use the loo) the lobbies look like the 1990s and the guests likely there on packages. As in, they don’t feel like the discerning traveller’s choice. The Walk isn’t on the beach, but rather on the land-side side of JBR Walk. Guests can walk across to Hilton Jumeirah which has private sunbeds on a public beach. As in, the pool area runs down onto the beach but the final stretch to the waterline is public. It’s also close to the busy public stretch of beach so you do get a lot of people walking by that part of the beach. Hilton The Palm is a wildcard as it’s not yet open and is sort of promising a private beach albeit separated from the pool area by the public Palm boardwalk. Considering how past their time the 2 Hiltons on JBR Walk are, I’d be inclined to take a punt on the Hilton Palm. Oddly enough location-wise and ambience-wise, I’d rank the Doubletree above the 2 nearby Hiltons. I’ve never stayed but I have walked in and around and it felt like a more spacious footprint and located down the end of the beach so quieter and may feel more private. It added a modern tower to the existing building and rooms appear from online reports to be in good nick.

LGW north plaza premium isnt opening.. cos they have no staff lol.

No1 is its usual useless self unless u have prebooked and the other lounge next to it still seems to just be there for decorative purposes 🙂

Thanks. Its a short stopover (2 days) i was thinking just to stick it out with Jumeriah (for the facilities) but the palm one is near a mall. I also found it difficult to find their tripadvisor link for the palm. Sorry i missed out a letter but the odd hotel i was considering was the other doubletree (mall of emirates i.e not the other doubletree near the beach) if i recall doubletree range do not upgrade gold members

    Carlos

Now that amex have released a platinum credit card. How likely is it to get an upgrade bonus (like they did for the charge card holders)

The 24m gap is soo long as compared to 6m

    Hi Both,

Confusing as there are multiple Hiltons and Doubletrees around Dubai!

Anyway – here are my 2 cents, all stays are with family:

Stayed 2022: Hilton Garden Inn Mall of the Emirates. Perfectly nice hotel, clean with large rooms and 30 percent of the price of Hilton/DT Jumeirah beach hotels. There is a heated pool but does not see much sunshine. Plenty of budget places to eat. Also nice places to eat within MofE which is next door. Area is not as flash and touristy as The Walk. Easy to get around the city from here. Traffic reasonable

Stayed 2018: Doubletree Jumeirah Beach The Walk. Lovely hotel in a skyscraper, fresh rooms and apartments, beautiful pool area. Direct beach access (not private). On The Walk so plenty of places to eat.

Stayed 2017: Hilton The Walk. Rooms are tired and dated. Access to the Hilton pool area which is nice and has direct beach access (not private). Full access to Hilton facilities.

Please note that if you are staying on The Walk – the traffic in the evenings getting to and from there is very busy! Can take 20 minutes just getting off The Walk in a taxi…

I have not stayed at Hilton The Palm or DT Mall of the Emirates

    Have a lovely time

Revel in the randomness. I once moderated a very small internet forum on an obscure technical subject. Our most determined and persistent spammer was ….. advertising for a cowboy-themed colouring book 😀

If you set an alert with SeatSpy, does it still let you know that seats have been released if someone snaps them up at midnight/1 am? Trying to track F to BOS for next summer and BA seem to have either suddenly massively reduced the seats available OR someone is snapping them up most nights as soon as they appear. Up till a couple of weeks ago they were appearing every day.

This person embezzled £5.3 from his employer and spent a slice of it on 180 flights with BA. That’s a lot of Avios and TPs.

Giving up on HfP for today.

5 pages of spam is ridiculous.

Now that is some specialised SPAM! For mine spammers were easily blocked, the real problem were the trolls. Some were blatant so easily identified and banned (helped that VPN’s + IP awareness weren’t so common place) however others were more insidious in their approach. That was harder to manage. I still remember one trying to argue quite vociferously that VHS was better quality than DVD. That was just funny, but it got a lot of regulars riled up.

Those MAGA campaigners sure know every dirty trick in the book … start luring them in with apparently innocuous gateway click bait, and before you know it, you’ve brainwashed them into an armed storming of Capitol Hill.

I think I may have been reading the same forum as that rings a bell

There was another guy who argued (well into the noughties) that Laser Disc was the future. This was when Blu Ray was starting to displace DVD sales. I think he might have been the only guy outside of Japan (or an A/V museum) that still played Laser Discs.

No doubt there was also some guy that maintained that Betamax was gonna come roaring back 🤡

    Carlos

Just got an email from Vouchercloud about Gatwick Parking (£20 amazon voucher) looks like they have backtracked whilst I was making an order (i.e. clicked on their email offer and activated online) is it likely they will pay out?

My backup option was Garden Inn Mall of Emirates (Sorry I confused this for a DoubleTree) and although it was half the price in points, I wanted to take the OH somewhere special

Does anyone have experience of using Avios to upgrade a ticket for work travel? Can you ascribe any value to the Avios? It’s my Ltd company & travelling to a conference in US. I wouldn’t normally even think about it but I can get PE return for £1k with J availability to upgrade into vs. £4K cash even looking at connections or localish alternative destinations.

For audit you could provide proof of the standard purchase price of avios 1.6p per avios. Better if you had actually purchased some if your case is that you own the company but I did not. I just gathered the proofs including costs of purchasing same travel by other means and it went through. Talk to your accountant

I have a speculative booking at Hilton Palm this autumn in case it does finally open (the identical Marriott next door is still unavailable for future bookings, but both looked finished when I walked past in March). So please do report on your experience

Whats the bog standard referral points (for the referrer) on a amex platinum?

Is it currently enhanced for every plat holder?
