Forums Payment cards American Express Companion voucher upgrade question

  • 6 posts

    Hi all

I have a 2-4-1 companion voucher which is only valid for economy class. I intend to use it for a solo flight halving the number of Avios needed. I really want to go to New Zealand / Australia but the thought of that in economy is untenable 🙁
Is there any way I can upgrade the voucher by any means? happy to be very creative on this eg taking out a different card, adding money, buying points etc.

Any suggestions appreciated or am I stuck with an economy to Europe?

    many thanks 🙂

I think some people have had success upgrading a 241 booking after better seats have appeared – you would need to call BA and ask about this once you’ve made your economy booking. There’s no way to upgrade the actual voucher, you have to book economy seats with it. You’d only be able to upgrade to PE with avios though.

You can always ask how much a cash upgrade to PE or CW would be at the airport, if there’s any room in either cabin.

What your problem may be is finding seats to Australia (BA doesn’t fly to NZ) – the SYD route is extremely popular and award seats get snapped up very quickly. Have you got a strategy in place for getting the seats you want?

If you’re prepared to look at other options (e.g. USA or Middle East), you could use your companion voucher on day flights at the RFS price. These are reasonable-length flights (often under 8 hours), and can be terrific value at peak periods, costing from 25k avios plus £50 each way in economy.

I like the suggestion of considering using the voucher for USA or middle east. I
wouldn’t want to risk trying to make changes at the airport. I am not stuck to any particular time of travel and can go anytime so I need to do some more research perhaps. Right now, I am working on a strategy NothernLass 🙂
