Forums Payment cards American Express Earning Avios elsewhere (or at least keeping them alive)?

    Forum member’s OH here…
I was all set to apply for the Amex Gold today, entirely for the sign-up bonus as my wife earns us all the Avios on her BAPP & perks on her Platinum Amex. Using HfP Articles I established that I wasn’t eligible for the sign-up bonus, as I already have the free BA Amex.
This is unfortunate, as I have hardly used the free BA card in a couple of years (because wife earns all the Avios & a companion voucher etc.) So, with an eye to the future, I decided to cancel my free BA Amex. I went into the Chat & the agent confirmed I’m not eligible for the Gold bonus so I asked to cancel. We got as far as the T’s&C’s for me to agree to but I noticed that these contained the phrase “by cancelling your Card you will no longer be able to collect Avios.”
That got me thinking; how will I safeguard the Avios I have already (not that many but I don’t want to lose them). I understand that Avios expire if there is no activity on one’s Avios account (within 2 years??) So, I didn’t finalise the cancellation and wanted to seek the Forum’s opinion on doing this. How will I earn any Avios at all, with the important emphasis on just earning a small quantity in order to keep my Avios account alive? I have previously done this by spending just one £11 transaction this year on the card I’m planning to cancel.
What shall I do now? TIA 🙂

Plenty of ways on the Avios website: https://www.avios.com/en-GB

You can also gain Avios when booking with Avis and entering your BA number. Or just flying with any OneWorld airline and using your BA club number just once on those 2 years!

Ah! Thanks @yonasi, I was confusing the Amex collection route (the only one I know) with the Avios.com/BA account route (which I leave to my wife to sort out). I’d best leave this points business to her I think.

You can get the Platinum, get bonus and cancel pro rata if you so wish as thats the only card you can get.

Yes, MR are interchangeable points which you wife is getting on Plat. Avios and solely Avios is whats shes getting on her BAPP.

If you are UK based and shop even infrequently in Sainsbury’s get a Nectar Card. Link it to your BAC account. 400NP = 250Avios. Do that once a year and your Avios will never expire.

Or create a HHA with BAC and then every time you or your wife makes a redemption you will have activity on your account and that will extend expiry by another 36 months.

Thank you @davefl @zapato1060 and @AJA. “The Wife” here, taken back my HfP account & chastisement administered. All that you offer makes sense and I think it’s time I changed my password 🙄

He’s just being inquisitive and wanting to be just like ‘The Boss’. Don’t chastise him for wanting to be a helpful OH. End of the day he was polite and courteous + he didn’t post anything naughty. Check the homes version of your netnanny so he doesn’t go trying to click on any sites he shouldn’t but he was fine. Maybe sit him down and have a chat about what’s safe and not safe to do online. And if you think he’s mature enough maybe even help him make an account all of his own.
