Free night certificates – book by or stay by?

I have 2 free award night certificates in my account. The headline on the certificate says book by mid April for the first one. Is it safe to assume I can book for a future date or is this a stay by date?

I remember it has been book by in the past, but think there were some changes last year?

Normally book by, I think stay by just applied to certificates which had been extended due to covid.

Mine says “Redeem by 1st April” – to me that means I need to have used it/exchanged it by that date, especially as they’re only “used” when you check out of the hotel.
