Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Have we been involuntarily downgraded?

  • 63 posts

I’m due to fly Club World to Japan on Tuesday, BA0005, with two reward seats.

I’ve been periodically checking the seat map (planning to select seats at check-in 24h before).

Today, the seat map shows no seats left available. There were 5 left yesterday.

Can anyone advise – is this an early warning sign that we’ve been involuntarily downgraded?

I know I can find out definitively tomorrow lunchtime, but I’m keen to begin managing my expectations if it’s likely.

Not necessarily, BA often assigns seats a few days out and you’ll be able to see this at OLCI. It sounds like it could well be a full cabin though, so it may not be possible to change seats at T-24.

You won’t know for sure until you get to the airport, however, and things can change on the day like people no-showing.

There are two unallocated seats in Club (blocked so not currently available to you), plus one free in First for someone (else) to be potentially upgraded in to freeing up another Club seat, so nothing to worry about at this point.

    Thank you both.

Things not to say when boarding an aircraft….. 😁 Along with saying “Hi” to anyone named Jack!

Has OP been able to complete OLCI?

    Ha! Indeed.

And yes, I was able to OLCI today. No two seats adjacent to one another, but I’m hoping we can find a willing swap when we board.

Most people will swap for a “better seat” (e.g. window). But board early as once people are settled they are unlikely to want to move. Also offer to swap back for any reason (so the other passenger doesn’t think you’re pulling a fast one!). Pretty much always works out in Club.

I travelled from JNB to Lhr last year and they downgraded me at check in from premium to economy without saying a word !! I was furious ,but the flight was over booked
They offered me £300 as e voucher as an apology and said I would also get a pro rata refund of my ticket.I received 10000 Avios back and £15 back in cash.I have complained more times to mention for a breakdown of their refund, but nearly a year on it still has not been rectified !!!

I’m afraid you have fallen for BA’s cunning plan! Instead of asking BA for a breakdown of the amount you are owed, tell them what you are owed and that they have only so far paid 10k Avios and £15 so they still owe you x Avios and £y. The compensation you are owed for a long haul flight such as this is 75% of the Avios you paid and 75% of the cash you paid, but BA can deduct actual taxes or charges paid away to a third party before calculating the cash part. This should work out higher than just the difference between Premium and Economy and is supposed to reflect also compensation for the inconvenience/discomfort.

The £300 e-voucher appears to be BA’s standard proffer for downgrades and is usually offered on an ex gratia/goodwill basis and should be in addition to the 75% compensation to which you are entitled as above, not part of it.

You need to put yourself in the driving seat, show them your calculations in the clearest possible format, per person and total if more than one pax, tell them they have delayed for too long since your original claim of XX date and, absent a response and confirmation of payment in full within 21 days, you will escalate the matter to CEDR or MCOL.

Exactly what JDB said. Make sure you persevere with getting what you are owed.

BA can be an absolute nightmare to deal with when they owe you money. Going to CEDR or MCOL can be quite daunting and time consuming for the inexperienced and I’m sure BA use this to their advantage in not paying people what they are owed.
