Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club London to Sydney Avios redemption questions

  • 25 posts

    Hi All ,
New to the Avios realm and I’m relatively up to date with everything but making a booking and one of the threads posted here has confused me slightly so wondered if I could get some questions answered because I can’t seem to find the answers on the T&C’s on BA Website

Firstly, I am looking at making a booking for a LHR SYD return which is currently 60,000 Avios and £325 (Making use of my AMEX Companion Voucher). If I needed to cancel this booking prior to travel, would I receive a refund of £325 less the £35 admin fee or do you lose the cash value altogether? I was lead to believe the later however a thread on here has confused me stating it was a full refund less the £35 fee.

Secondly, I am trying to work out the best value in purchasing Avios in order to purchase the flight itself. Currently sitting with 53,744 Avios in my account with the flights costing 60,000. Is there a formula to be able to work out which way is more cost effective in purchasing avois (Simple purchase v boosting credit card spending v using less avoid and more cash)

You would only lose £35 pp if you cancelled. Unless BA has an offer on currently, boosting is probably the most cost-effective way of purchasing avios.

Can I just ask – what cabin is this for and is this using the voucher for a 50% avios reduction? I’m not sure where the 60k figure is coming from.

Thanks! I actually managed to miss the seat I was going for in the end grrrr

It is in Economy (Not blessed with a Business Class Companion unfortunately :().

Going out in Feb on a peak date and returning in Sept on an off peak date, with 1 AMEX Companion comes to 60k miles and £325 taxes. Or I think it was 57.5k for an off peak departure date too

SYD is either 50k off-peak or 55k peak. Check from regionals airports as more availability is opened up by the 241 voucher. Obvs you would have to take the plane say from MAN.

I think that’s only the case with the Premium voucher.

I hadnt even considered that! So you think its worth a try checking say MAN – SYD / NCL – SYD etc to find better availability (possibly)?

@aq.1988 aluded to that it maybe only the 241 from BA premium plus. So maybe not usable with your basic 241. It’s worth a cheeky check though. Good luck.

Noted! I had looked just after that to no avail. I suppose its only the same as doing it from other airports to access other avialabiltiy when paying with cash instead.

I have setup an alert now with SeatSpy so fingers crossed something comes up!

Thanks for all the help all.
