Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club QR as a potential status alternative

I am sitting at Doha airport during the first of three trips to HKT, BKK and MLE over the next few weeks. I have just played with the QR mileage/tier point calculator and those trips will earn 562 Q points for an average of £1,800 per flight (a mixture of P and R); that is just enough for Emerald which feels perfectly reasonable.

It would have been enough for OWE on BA as well a few weeks ago…

I went for Qatar as I had emergency travel soon after the news broke, that BA was closing down their loyalty program for leisure travellers or anybody that could actuaĺly choose which airline they fly on for work.

As the totally ridiculous Gold for 20,000 was insulting and my 3trust disappeared even of Silver on BA remaining useful or achievable, and as there was no advice here I had to make a quick decision where I jumped to.

I chose Qatar but I now regret this. On the earning side I might not quite make the status I need, other airlines are easier overall. Avios earned on QR is just about ok and as it’s avios can be moved to another program where there’s better value for spending on my routes.

Given time or the advice that’s now available on Matt’s Planet or the forums here, I would now have chosen Finnair or even Alaskan. Or possibly even returned to my favourite Star Alliance.
