It’s not just BA where it happens. I currently have Flying Blue silver & contacted KLM to check if my luggage allowance covered just me or the party of 2 adults & 2 children. I was told it covered the party. Get to the check in desk & guess what? No, it only covers me. Luckily I fly from Newcastle & they don’t have the ability to take money off you, but I was warned that coming back Delta would take the cash. They didnt as we moved our luggage around.

It’s somewhat different if you’re given incorrect information over the phone. Your booking confirmation should state your personal luggage allowance and those travelling with you, assuming you entered your Flying Blue number at the point of ticket purchase. Mine showed the greater allowance but they couldn’t apply it at check in.
I’ve had to go back to BA on e-mail to ask when I can expect to be refunded for the excess baggage charges as they made no mention of this in their e-mail, only an apology and 5,000 Avios. If they didn’t think the charges were incorrectly levied, they’d have nothing to apologise for, so I take it I’m due a refund but it’s best to be clear, in case they think the Avios will make me go away and forget about it.
