Forums Frequent flyer programs Other frequent flyer schemes Singapore Airlines flight to Dubai cancelled – Rebooking question

  • 123 posts

I was due to fly SIN-DXB today with Singapore Airlines on a redemption booking in business class. Singapore Airlines have cancelled all flights to Dubai for the next few days (I believe BA have done the same).

Singapore Airlines rebooked me on a flight today via Kuala Lumpur. Singapore Airlines to KL in business class, then with Emirates to Dubai in economy.

I spoke to Singapore Airlines live chat to ask if I could instead be booked on a direct flight from Singapore to Dubai with Emirates. Their response was…

“we do not have the access to the system of Emirates Airlines on our end. It’s wither the airport control can provide alternative flights. You need to book with them youself”

I asked if they would provide me with any compensation, they said no. Just a refund.

I don’t want to fly via KL and then in economy for 7+ hours so booked myself on tonight’s Emirates flight with cash. Does anyone know if I’m likely to be able to get any compensation from Singapore Airlines?

Unfortunately, the answer is no compensation (and you wouldn’t have got any in Europe either) and as for rerouting rights, it’s simply a matter of the best you can negotiate. Obviously it’s going to be tricky as so many pax will be looking to be rebooked. It’s possible you may be able to claim on insurance, although they may be funny because of the nature of the cancellations.

SQ and EK unfortunately are fierce competitors, so its not surprising that SQ have done the bare minimum on this route.
Also a consequence of zero consumer protections in Singapore, unless this is part of a ticket originating from UK / EU.

Has SQ not offered you a business class seat on their flight in the next day or two?

Even if the trip originated in the UK/EU EC/UK261 wouldn’t apply as SQ is not an EU/UK airline and the affected flight was between two third countries. I think the issue is the cancellation of flights to DXB due to the events in Iran are curently suspended until Wednesday.

Go to the airport and speak to them, research what you want first. Especially since COVID unless you are PPS their call centres and live chat have really gone downhill unfortunately

    Ah that makes sense.

Might be too late for OP, but SQ have an office in Orchard road, Ion orchard building i think. The staff there are quite helpful and can be better than calling them on phone.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies.

I made it to Dubai last night in the end with Emirates. It was a flight that I won’t forget in a hurry! Quite an experience, with passengers able to watch live news channels mid-flight on the plane, + being connected to the internet on phones and laptops, seeing in real time the airspace in the middle east being closed, including the UAE itself when we were over halfway there. I presumed we would U-turn back to Singapore, or divert to an airport in India or Pakistan, but we continued and landed in Dubai in the end as their airspace reopened.

Glad you made it! Sounds like an eventful flight. Did you get seated in Business?

Hey, paid cash for business then points to upgrade to first.

Good result, nice to hear a messy situation turned into a triumph.
