Forums Other Destination advice Solo Christmas recommendations?

  • 11 posts

Forgive the “bah humbug” but I am looking for recommendations for solo travel over Christmas.
My circumstances mean my UK options would be a friendmas due to non-resolvable family issues (blah blah blah). I don’t have children either so I think I would prefer to get away. I find that solo travel in resorts works for about 3 days max. I’ve also been to the UAE most years since childhood.

Taking all that into account – does anyone have any recommendations of destinations to get away to over the Christmas period?

Do you scuba dive? A week long liveaboard could be a good option if so

You could do Madrid and a canary island city.

I really really enjoyed Dahab (was there over New Year couple years ago) – it has lots of touristy bits, but also has some local flavour.

Depends on the distance, of course, but I love Hong Kong at that time of year, and Japan has also been recommended here.
Also perfect weather in Brazil: we’ve done a Florianopolis/Rio combo before.

+1 for @Michael C’s recommendation of Hong Kong. The weather at that time of year is usually excellent for hiking opening up many such opportunities. The Maclehose Trail is my favourite but there are also excellent walks on the main island, such as the Dragon’s Back, and on other islands such as Lantau without the seating heat and/or uncomfortably high humidity. This of course in addition to the usual shopping, temples, and viewpoints, etc.

I would also suggest Hong Kong as good time of year weather wise. Have walked across a number of the islands. You could also go to Macau for a day or longer. We’ve been there a number of times and on last trip found a very good self guided walking tour online.

I also recommend HK,I have not been in HK at that time for years but the Christmas lights would be amazing, weather is good, nothing is closed down so you won’t feel like you should also be with family…

Also take advantage of your single status and be willing to fly 24/25 Dec. Usually families will want to be in situ by then so whilst the long haul flights won’t be empty, there should be mercifully fewer overexcited children on board.

OP really does need to come back and be more specific on what they are looking for including length of the trip, how far they are willing to travel and if they want a beach trip or more of an active city break.

Very true as if staying on NYE, some hotels will impose a mandatory NYE dinner fee and also possibly restrict cancellation terms

Thank you all – interesting input so far. I had not considered HK before. BA Flyer mentioned extra context – I would target a shorter trip so around Christmas and return to the UK by NYE (especially to avoid any mandatory gala night type event). A more active trip is probably preferred- as I alluded to in my initial post, resort based trips (for me) work best at 3 nights max. Beach suggestions would be great – but provided there is a lot to see and do in the area (distraction from the time of year, in particular). Great note from Blair as I would (personally) very much prefer a cabin with potentially fewer children!!
