I’m UK based with a Barclays upgrade voucher due to expire in August. I am also short on holiday allowance so looking for a weekend break to use it up that also doesn’t cost a lot of Avios. Any suggestions from those here? Icing on the cake would be a wide bodied plane. Thought I’d found an option to Helsinki but it’s not operated by BA so not an option
With BA wide body now means long haul, East Coast US might be worth considering for a (long) weekend. Usually plenty of availability to New York, or you could try Boston, Washington, etc.
Short haul is all the same hard product, so choose somewhere you want to go.
Don’t force yourself to use the voucher.
Sometimes that’s just the way the custard cream crumbles.
I’m in agreement with AndrewT – a trip to New York would be a good option in this situation.
There’s a wide body daily to Madrid isn’t there? I’d far rather that than New York personally.
That’s Iberia not BA, so can’t use a Barclays voucher.
The advantage with short haul is no Premium so the upgrade is from Y to J. Of course the product is what it is, but if there is somewhere you want to go anyway, pick that and at least you can enjoy the lounges and a slightly elevated on board experience.
Otherwise East Coast is your best bet as others have said. Depends on how many Avios you have – and are you London based?
Short haul flights can be very expensive at peak times – £1k and up on popular routes, so it can be a good use of the voucher. So if you’re looking at using it in July/August, there’s very good value to be had, though of course you’ll need to be flexible on the route at this stage.
Thanks for the suggestions. I’m not London based and have no strong desire for an East Coast trip at the moment especially with the limited holiday. Will probably just let this one go. I did manage to use another one for a relative who needed lots of luggage allowance for a European trip which was a need a BA business ticket fully met
