Does anyone know if an upgrade of the card trigger a credit search?
I can’t swear to it but I don’t believe so. I’ve done it twice previously and although wasn’t specifically looking I’ve never noticed a credit search. As you continue with the same credit limit and internal Barclays account number (as opposed to the card number which does change) there doesn’t seem any obvious need as they aren’t offering any new credit services.
Just jumping on this – I need to go the other way and downgrade to the free one.
Is it just a case of going to ‘Card > Barclaycard Avios Plus > Change to a different card > Get Barclaycard Avios’?
Kinda feels like that’s applying for a new card, rather than downgrading. Or does it amount to the same thing.
Not sure why ‘Change to a different card’ feels like ‘Apply for a new card’, but yes that’s what you do. It takes effect from your next statement date.
Thanks. I guess I was expecting my existing card to just ‘become’ a basic one, which I could then switch back to the Plus in the future.
But from your post above it sounds more like they give a new card and number, and it could just as well be the cashback card or something else.
OK I see what you mean. To Barclays it’s a switch to any different card type. It’s not an upgrade or downgrade of the Avios card as such.
Yes in principle you can switch back again if the option is offered to you, which seems to take at least 12 months.
Don’t think I ever got a credit check even for my first application!
Sorry for another stupid question, if you have a balance on the card, statement not generated, does the balance get transferred to the new card automatically? And the statement date remains the same?
Yes and Yes.
Your next statement is produced as normal. On the statement date the annual spend tracker is reset (so don’t switch if you are close to earning a voucher) and you start paying the fee and earning 1.5 Avios / £.
The normal statement cycle then continues, just with a different card number (they also send the new card around the next statement date).
