Flew BKK-SIN a few years ago and they were on time with no issues. During Covid, they refunded a cancelled flight in full without issue. In contrast, two local competitors of theirs both refused and I had to initiate Amex chargebacks. I’d definitely say they’re one of the better LCCs.

Is that for LIS or OPO? There was something similar in OPO but the stalls were all empty inside (possibly a psot-pandemic effect) but we ate outside on the terrace, which was lovely.

LIS, and I’ve visited a couple of times since Covid and it was fully open with no empty stalls. It’s 5-10 minutes walk West from Cais do Sodre train and Metro station.

@ExpatinBerlin, I’ve also used one of our expiring 241s for LIS at the end of September (plus an expiring Ambassador cert). We’re flying back direct to MAN on TAP, which means that theoretically we can use the other half of the 241 some time in the next 12 months, possibly for a planned OPO trip next summer.

It’s our first time in LIS so please post any recommendations!

Time Out Market for food. It’s like a food hall with lots of small restaurants around the edge. The seats are all in the middle of the hall and not allocated to any restaurant, so you can mix ‘n’ match what you have from the different vendors.

I have stayed at a Hilton all-inclusive on points and they always charge something for the children. 2 guests seem to be included in the points rate. Any additional guests have to pay. I don’t know whether the charge is based on room rates those days or a fixed amount. Your experience doesn’t surprise me.

@meta, do you have any tricks for cheap flights? I haven’t searched exhaustively, but TAP seem to be the main option and are not that cheap from UK or direct from LIS from what I’ve seen. I came to the same conclusion for flights to Cape Verde.

I held my nerve during Covid and kept my Virgin points. Maybe I should send them to Hilton after all!

I cancelled my card through the app Chat function yesterday. Had to wait about 40 minutes for an advisor, but took around 10 minutes after that.

I planned to use the Amex credit offer for Marriott Homes & Villas and searched quite a few properties for a trip I’m taking next May. In the end, I found the same property on booking dot com and it was cheaper than the Marriott price, even after the £150 discount. I also read some comments that aligned with my experience – that their prices aren’t very competitive.

As Michael C suggests, staying near to stations is a good idea. We like to stay near Cais do Sodre as it has a Metro station and a mainline station that heads out west in the direction of Belem, Estoril and Cascais.

Remember also that Hilton is, I think, technically a ‘continental’ breakfast benefit so it could also be restricted to certain buffet items, although it is very rare that this happens.

I’d love to see that policed. “Put those baked beans back! I’ll call the manager…”

If they expire then you can buy them back at a lower cost than buying new miles. I think it’s 10USD per thousand miles compared to 25. I doubt it’s attractive unless it leaves you with enough for a flight redemption.

I kept my VS miles when many sent them to Hilton. I have no interest in going to the US, so Hong Kong was one of the few alternatives that did interest me. I planned to use them to Brazil, but they culled that route. So now do I wait and try to use them on Vietnam Airways or transfer them to Hilton?

I’ve had the Hilton Barclaycard for about 10 years. Where’s the big loyalty reward from Barclays for that?

I stayed at the Doubletree last month and Anna’s summary is spot on. We walked to the terminal as the minibus fee for 4pax got my miserly back up.

I was seriously considering the DT Kemer, so good to read this feedback. I read on FT just a couple of days ago that a Hampton near IST Airport is taking reservations from December. It will be a good option near the airport if it is reasonably priced.

Covent Garden Spend £50 (cumulative), get £10 back promotion is back! Spend by 1 Sept.

Used this offer last summer at Din Tai Fung for £100 spend, split over two cards, so got £20 back!

OMG! I love Din Tai Fung. Have been to branches in Taipei, Hong Kong and Sydney (4 times). It’s probably my favourite restaurant in the world. I didn’t know they’d opened in the UK until I read your post. Thank you for the info!!!

Are there really so many people who have 3+ Visa or Mastercard products? To be honest I thought these changes were too weak and unlikely to raise them much cash.

I did have until Creation decided they didn’t want my business anymore 😉

Amex have not been prompt in the past at updating the map to remove merchants that no longer exist and merchants that don’t take Amex and have been reported as such. Both of these types of merchant still exist on the latest map when I search around where I live.

Several years ago we stayed regularly in Hiltons when they were using Peter Thomas Roth. I ended up loving the smell of the shampoo that contained hundreds ‘n’ thousands. I associated the smell with holidays and wish they still made it…

When I researched pre-covid, I was looking at minimum 2 weeks to do the majority of things with 5 days on the beach.

What sort of things were you planning, meta? I thought Cape Verde was mainly a beach destination.
