August Bank holiday weekend. last weekend in October wmd weekend before christmas (Thur – Mon bookings)- all at the De Witt

I followed the link in the first post so used web version of IHG as it pre populates the discount code which isn’t selectable otherwise.

    Thanks, got it now.
    I’m seeing about 10% – 15% reductions.
I’ll keep the link saved, might come in useful one day.

    Thanks @dst87

But yes, May half term next 2023 would work in theory, but I have a ‘me problem’: I can’t bear the thought of travelling long haul for (what will likely be) 6 or 7 nights max. If I’m going to the effort of travelling far away, it needs to be for 2 weeks or more to make the most of it.

May half-term should be a day longer next year because of the Jubilee. We’re doing St Lucia Sat -> Sun arriving back in the UK Monday.

But then I do (did) long haul in WTP regularly for 3-4 nights. Sometimes 1 night (man that was always grim).

    Isn’t that this year (2022)?

EDIT: in the first days of these new forums, I only had a captcha once. Now I get them all the time when there are multiple quotes… but at least my post comes through right away.

Just tried it for two bookiongs for the De Witt in Amsterdam and the IC in San Francisco and it does come up with the “Preferred Partner Rate at least 20% Off” in the description

Rate is 20% of the non member Best Flexible Rate (which works out out to be about 18% off the member BFR). IHG always quite discounts based on the non member rate,

BFR cancellation is 1 day before arrival. It’s 3 days for the promo rate. Refundable deposit required on the promo rate.

Chris, I can’t find any dates between May and December this year at any hotels in Amsterdam.
What dates did you pick, just so I can check what I’m doing wrong.

May half term 2023 work for you? (isn’t your partner a teacher?)

I shall never make fun of Chris Heyes and his total disregard for personal identifiable information ever again!
BTW, did we ever establish what became of dear Chris?

On the other hand, if I travel shorthaul, I feel it would be a waste of a companion voucher as European shorthaul business class seems barely any better than regular economy for an approx 3 hours in the air.
Like I say, it is a ‘me problem’.

Easter 2023 is not an option for other reasons.

in reply to: Best hotels in Thailand?
    Aston100

I booked the Shangri-La in Chiang Mai for later this year.
    Hope it’s decent!

I haven’t stayed but from what I’ve heard from friends it isn’t up to the usual Shang standards even before COVID & especially post-COVID – very tired, lots of facilities closed or dirty

    Oh dear.
Mind you, I used the Amex travel promotion for £100 off and the pricing at the time was (IMO) pretty good. Also they’ve confirmed an upgrade of some sort.
    I think I paid under £70pn b&b.
I intend to be out and about most of the time, so hopefully any shortcomings with the decor and facilities won’t be a show-stopper.

And I bet the IHG best price guarantee continues to be unfit for purpose.

in reply to: Car hire in Malaga Airport?
    Aston100

Goldcar is usually OK. Not used them in Malaga but used them extensively on the Canaries. If you use the discount code “MyGoldcarClub” (from memory) you get 35% off.

Goldcar is the firm that seemed to have most of the complaints when I was doing my research. So many negative comments on TripAdvisor, mostly regarding additional charges for damage that you didn’t do.

in reply to: Car hire in Malaga Airport?
    Aston100

Malaga seems to be one of the worst places for dodgy car hire firms, and there are reports about dubious practices by even the big name operators (finding ‘scratches’ and other ‘damage’ after you’ve returned the car, and things of that nature).
Helle Hollis is the firm I used and which was also recommended by a whole bunch of people on sites such as Tripadvisor.
They have a complimentary minibus that picks up / drops off. Only a 2 minute ride from the airport to their premises.
Go full to full on the fuel policy; there is a petrol station a couple of hundred yards away.

Thanks, with a 4yo in tow, would prefer not to have to have an additional bus in the process though.

If you look on google maps, you’ll see the Helle Hollis site is well within walking distance from arrivals – 5 mins tops I reckon.

    EDIT: go away Captcha

Would a renamed thread necessarily remain ‘read’ on your screen?
Probably something to do with cookies, but I’m not techy enough to know.

I was given 35k within a month of receiving the Platinum Card. I was refused any further retention offers when I cancelled my card 8 months later (earlier this month).

in reply to: IHG choices for a few nights in New York?
    Aston100

Always check the rate, NYC is getting the stealth taxes i.e. resort fees

We asked the hotel to remove the resort fee when we made our booking early last year.
I was surprised they actually agreed to this.
Perhaps they were desperate for business at the time.
So it seems to be within the hotels gift to give.

I stayed at the Kimpton Times Square last month.
Was a good experience. Got a double upgrade (status recognition) at the busiest time of the year for them. Very friendly staff (by NYC standards)
    Literally a 30 seconds walk to Times Square ‘proper’ (46th / 7th & Broadway).
Preferred it to the IC Times Square which we also stayed at for a couple of nights.

Don’t think I’d stay in the Times Square area again though.

you need to have the money in your account for you to be eligible.

You need to have the full amount, or just something?

Enough to cover the cost of the gift card(s).
As soon as an offer comes along, I quickly top the account up with sufficient funds to cover the cost of all the gift cards, and then use the promo codes to buy said gift cards.
If I was unlucky enough to have missed some of the gift cards due to them selling out, I transfer the balance back out again, leaving a minimal amount (under a pound).

I’m pretty out of the loop… is this a recurring promotion Monese offer to cardholders? Is it worth having a card just for this? It seems unappealing otherwise, unless I’m missing something.

I usually have under a pound in my Monese account which I quickly top-up with a card or bank transfer (or both).
I don’t use the account for anything other than these gift cards.
    The account costs me nothing.
Monese haven’t bothered me about lack of usage at all.
    I don’t see any downsides.

I caught on to this via HfP a little while back, and once it looked like it was frequent, and I was missing out, I also opened an account. Literally just use it for these discounted giftcards. Make a quick bank transfer as soon as notified (if not already enough in account left over from last time), and then buy as many as possible. This time missed the 400, but got the rest. Would definitely say worth it.

I am currently doing renovation, these are super helpful for purchases in Amazon, B&Q which can be purchased using Morrison gift cards. And I fill my car whilst I’m at the store. Just thinking I was running a bit low on my gift cards last night as I need to buy a water softener system…

Reney, have you had any trouble using these for Morrisons and then purchasing Amazon gift cards within the store?
Was there a transaction limit? did staff need to get involved etc?
I don’t have a Morissons near me, but am mindful of the expiry date rapidly approaching for some of my older Monese giftcards, so a one-off trip to a supermarket to convert to Amazon would be worthwhile.

I’ve got about £1700 worth of unused vouchers.
I wonder if there is a risk beyond expiry date and the loss of better redemption options.

Hi am, thanks for the reply.
It wouldn’t be the worst thing to end up flying on the early flight.
    I think I’ll give this a go.

Would I be able to change the flight online, or does it need a call into BA?
    Thanks.
