Open jaw isn’t a problem but can’t be done online you have to call. Did it earlier this year no problem.

If I have a Barclaycard Avios credit card, but have never otherwise banked with Barclays, am I an existing customer or a new customer if I apply to open a bank account?

I would have presumed an existing customer, but I’ve noticed my account type in the app is Barclaycard (and not Barclays) and I can only log into the Barclaycard website (and not Barclays).

The conditions referred to being an existing Barclays Current Account customer. I think if you’ve only ever held a Barclaycard then you are fine. (Sorry this reply is too late now, but maybe you started the process this morning!)

Anyone who’s switched to Barclays Premier and Avios Rewards decided to keep it on for the first year?

    Cancel after 4 months:

    Cash profit: £127 (£175 – 4 x £12)
    Avios: 31,000 (25,000 + 4 x 1500)

If you decide to keep it for 12 months:

    Cash profit: £31 (£175 – 12 x £12)
    Avios: 43,000 (25,000 + 12 x 1500)
    Barclays Cabin Upgrade Voucher

Wonder if 12k Avios and the Upgrade Voucher is worth the £96 cash loss? (although you’re only spending cash Barclays gave you) Guess it depends how much value you put on the upgrade voucher, and most HfP’ers likely have an Amex Companion Voucher anwyay…

This is perhaps a silly question, but I can’t seem to sign up for any kind of account using the app as the app seems to require me to “register for it” using an existing debit, credit, or other card with Barclays. Am I missing something?

Clear cache for this specific app and app data on your mobile andthe option should show up

Read on another forum that the Sign up for new account option disappears outside of business hours (or at least overnight). Seems odd but it is Barclays we’re talking about!

I Asked this the other day and the way we got to the bottom of it from a helpful HFPer was to check a credit score company who will have a note made of when the account was closed.

Amex on chat and phone were unhelpful and they could only see my OH in reference to the supplementary card holder that she is on my BAPP rather than the old account we were hoping to track down when she had a gold.

I checked this out recently for myself. I found my letter from Amex 2 years ago confirming my account closure which stated “your account is cancelled from DD/MM/YYYY” This date matched the account closure date on my credit record (checked via one of banking apps).

Would the date provided on the confirmation letter from Amex following a cancellation be reliable

This is the only date that counts. 100% reliable.

This made me check, and I do have my final statement and confirmation letter from Amex. “your account is cancelled from 11/06/2022“. So I think I would fall foul of the 24 months if I applied on 11/06/2024. Typical! For future reference for others, this date matches exactly the date on my credit report.

Contact Amex chat and get the specific date you cancelled. You can then work from there.

Hmmm seem to be stuck with that. I can log into Amex, and it defaults to a page offering me their range of cards which makes sense as I have no active account. However when I go to Chat, it asks me login again, and when I do it defaults back to the No Card page. Just round and round. If I get chance I’ll call them in the week.

Thanks for all the responses. I’ll get in touch with Amex.

Rather than cancel the Barclaycard, I would downgrade to the free one (if you haven’t already). I find it so useful for places where Amex isn’t accepted, plus works well with Curve for Fx spend.

I think it’s been over a year since the Barclaycard had an enhanced bonus, and Rob previously mentioned they are moving away from huge SUB’s, so you might not get anything more than 25k if that’s why you’re thinking to cancel the Barclaycard.

Hard to know what’s to do for the best with the Barclaycard. I’m on the free one but still inclined to cancel it, for the potential of a sign up bonus in the future. I know it probably won’t be huge, but something is better than nothing. And without a spouse flipping Amex/Barclaycard is the only way to maximise any bonuses. I have a separate fee free Mastercard I use for overseas spending, and take it on the chin I don’t earn Avios.
