I prebooked Uber and it was £50ish last month

Thanks for this thread. It prompted me to check my statements and the credited points are shambolic. Nothing like 6 points per £1. I’ll have to call Amex for a full reconciliation

Aha I see, so you’re trying to go from economy to business? My experience is limited to J to F where the APD is already at the higher tier

IAD is regularly apalling for arrival wait times. Security on departure is dire too. Have you tried Delta ex-DUB? Land in ATL, JFK or BOS and then a hop to DCA instead of IAD; DCA is a world of difference.

Points upgrade price remains static. Anecdotally the cash price diminishes – highest preflight online, drops after online check in, drops again at airport desk, drops to its final level on-board where only the purser can process upgrades on their tablet (though I have seen busy pursers give people the brush-off)

Is the Chinese restaurant going to re-open too though? It was by far the best option on the airport campus.

My experience is that auto-upgrade doesn’t work and if you don’t spot the seats becoming available you’ll miss out. Last time I flew there was no F upgrade space till after I had checked in onlibe 24hrs before departure. During check in, no indication of it. Waited 3 mins, having checked in for J, and suddenly F upgrade availability was showing. I believe they cater for full F cabins so seem happy to upsell every F seat.

Was the upgrade done via the App?

I’ve used both app and website in the past. For the post-Online check in upgrade, that was on the website.

As I had time at the weekend I checked every day Sept to Dec for UC availability MAN to JFK. I found 3 dates total; 2 of which were in late October. However I couldn’t find availability JFK to MAN to get me home using an upgrade voucher. Only a hanfdul of dates showed inboubd availability and they were either the same date as the outbound availability or flying on KLM via AMS and thus voucher-ineligible. (And also probably phantom KLM space).

What is the Amex IHG cashback offer, and on what card is it appearing?

Is it a Swiss flight number? And ticket issued by Swiss? If so, it shouldn’t make a difference and will credit normally as Swiss. Helvetic on behalf of Swiss operate many of their short haul routes and never had a problem with crediting. I don’t suppose you have Bonvoy Titanium? It might be better for you to claim the United Silver benefit, and credit to MileagePlus. United never expire points.

Great to hear you got it sorted. I have had similar when using United to book Swiss.

Good god those prices must be a joke. I suggest you try Flyertalk for a more active Aadvantage community; I have used them for EY and QR but in biz.

This Curve is ok/isn’t ok malarkey is intolerable and can’t go on. Fine it’s relatively niche but it is FCA-regulated/approved so they have some responsibility here to clarify if a consumer choice on fintech here is going to throttle said customer’s credit options there. I’m inclined to ask them via professional channels.

Etihad pricing ex-EU has seemed normal to me. £1400ish FRA-BKK/SIN, etc.

If I book an economy flex that shows upgrade to business available, by the time I complete the booking is the upgrade still likely to be available?

If you are still worried, book over the phone. Tell the agent what you want to do and they can hold the J award seat for you. I’ve even had them tinker away completing the booking while I transfer over from Amex MR to Skywards.

    Blair Waldorf Salad 1,084 posts

My advice, dont use tap at all. If anything goes wrong with your flight then good luck getting them to sort it. Customer service is worst i have ever experienced, they also have no understanding of ec2161. Save your MR for something else

Seconded. I do use them, but make my bookings via Amex Travel so I don’t have to deal with TAP

    Blair Waldorf Salad 1,084 posts

Indeed. My only viable use for VAFC miles is fixed price Delta domestic US flights or MAN-AMS/CDG for positioning. I can’t fathom how I’ll ever use a credit card voucher considering zero availability on VS metal. Even JFK just offers routes via AMS on KLM and using dynamic pricing.

    Blair Waldorf Salad 1,084 posts

Could NotTheRealRob perhaps offer some insights into the kind of hotels/pool scene expectations they have? The hotels being named all have their pluses but they vary a lot in terms of the ambience they offer. It’d be useful to name some previous European sun holiday stays that you have enjoyed, and which hotels they were. For me, both Hilton JBR and WA Palm are beach hotels, but vastly different in terms of ambience and scene. It’s a rare night I’m not stopped by a prostitute outside the Hilton JBR.

    Blair Waldorf Salad 1,084 posts

There is a new Hilton opening on the Palm soon. Will have a beach, be brand new and far fewer points than the Waldorf. Waldorf best though.

Or get a £40 taxi to Ras and stay at the better Waldorf there for half the money. We have reviewed.

Will the new Hilton Palm’s beach be private to the waterline, or just to the boardwalk? It is perilously close to Influencer Nirvana aka Five. I’d want a roped-off beach to the waterline to avoid encroachers.

Massive kudos to whoever had the genius to put this in the Housekeeping forum and blithely not remark on that. And here I thought the Finnair review would spark a debate about sockless feet on seats.

    Blair Waldorf Salad 1,084 posts

Some hotels don’t give you club access unless you’ve originally booked a club room initially. You could take it up with the hotel or IHG about why you don’t seem to have been given an actual room upgrade, but they might say something like the club rooms are on higher floors and that would technically constitute the upgrade!

Reception advised that I had been given an upgrade – “improved amenities” and “higher floor”. Nonsense, IMHO!

I did email their “Director of Cluster Operations’ (his business card was left in my room). In fairness, he replied promptly advising that “there must have been a miscommunication from our end” and arranged access.

That’s good service recovery, but discretionary rather than the rule we’ve come to know.

Only ones I know of are when travelling for work and ID does get asked for every time in my experience. Not a discount per se, but balacing initial cost to benefit across the stay, Stars and Luminous rates are often better value.

    Blair Waldorf Salad 1,084 posts

The points purchase during reward booking option appears to also include the 50% bonus cureently on offer for outright points purchases. Also if that reward booking is cancelled, the points aren’t refunded but rather drop into your Bonvoy account. Up to 100,000 a year, on top of the 100,000 you can outright purchase. I need to do the maths on this at the weekend but grateful for insights from anyone who already has.

I have 2 IC nights coming start of April, but booked using the AMB 2nd night free voucher. Will that satisfy my 2 nights? I think so, reading the terms of the offer. If anyone has first-hand experience, thoughts welcomed.
