Just catching up on yesterday’s daily chat final updates and alarmed by the story of the MAN lounge ‘self-upgrader’. This is theft, plain and simple. And it’s happening much more nowadays because the expectation of consequences has been removed.

On my last Avanti journey to Euston, I sat in the Standard Premier carriage and had a distinct feeling the young chap opposite did not have a SP ticket and would play the usual card of “I hadn’t realised, if you insist I move to standard I’ll go” when ticket checks happened. They ended up happening around Milton Keynes when it emerged not only did he not have a SP ticket, he had no ticket whatsoever. Nor any cards or money. The gruff Avanti ticket checker insisted he head to standard and he’d arrange for the BTP to handle the matter on arrival at Euston. Cue my eyeroll at Euston when I disembarked to see the thieving brat waltzing off the train further up with not a care in the world.

Do we as ordinary citizens need to start making ourselves heard to companies, that we expect to see theft punished? In hindsight I wish I’d guessed Avanti wouldn’t have backbone and contacted BTP myself.

As someone who travels very frequently on Avanti & London Northwestern between MK and London, there is tonnes on this that happens every time on these trains (and I’m sure on other lines as well)

Ones I’ve picked up on apart from the one you’ve mentioned , included people trying their luck at Euston if there’s no physical staff checking their tickets, funny how many people will see the staff there (for Avanti trains) and then turn around, or even chance their luck with the staff (even saw one person trying to bribe a ticket checker with £20 to let him on) or when the ticket inspector on the train comes around and they clearly have a London Northwestern train only and try to say someone told them to get on this train

I can’t even imagine how many people travel for free on London Northwestern trains when theres almost certainly no ticket inspectors, checks or barriers

    Thanks everyone for the advice

As a data point if anyone else has a similar situation

A 2 stop all checked through from London or Birmingham to Brisbane/Gold Coast worked out around £2600-£2800 through either Air France/China Eastern or SWISS/Singapore or Thai Airways/Qantas for a one way flight

Cheapest European City as a starting point was either
£1600 from Amsterdam on China Southern

    or

£1800 from Oslo on Lufthansa/Singapore Airlines

Thanks, he’s not really into the points game like the rest of the family, so generally just looking for the best price/deal for a one way flight with a decent experience

Would just be an added benefit if we could earn avios out of it

    Hi

My brother is moving to Australia (Gold Coast) for a couple of years for work in early August
And my parents want to buy him a one way business flight to get out there and tasked me with finding one

Baring the usual sites (google flights/skyscanner) anywhere else I should be looking to find a decent price/deal

Also apart from going on BA metal and having him part of a household account , I’m guessing there no other way for the person booking earn any points of booking for him

Thanks , yeah looking all the various pages on problems with curve, leading towards a cashback current account that will pay it on a direct debit as I know not all do

And a separate FX free card

    Candor 39 posts

Thanks , probably worth £6 delivery fee just to give it a go then

Even if it doesn’t would happily make use of the £250 FX Spending as would provide a small benefit over using First Direct or spending with Barclaycard Credit Card with the 2.99% fee

Has anyone ever gone through nectar’s portal onto Hilton to get points, I know its a lower earning rate 4 nectar points (so 2.5 avios) per £1
None of my Hilton Stays have paid out either, but will try it next time I book with them

    I hope so

Thankfully due to hotel status with Marriott have been able to secure late check out upto 4pm and also being in buisness longue was basic but comfortable enough to spend a few hours in so won’t have to worry about how spend 6/7 hours in Kingston or the airport terminal

Does anyone know of a nice Hilton with a pool and spa, that doesn’t charge through the roof for guests to use the pool?

    Thanks all!

Hilton Cardiff didn’t charge at all for use of the spa/pool

Exec lounge at CW is nice, much better than Bankside, but those prices look very cheap, are you sure?

DT Tower of London is often well priced and is beside the Tube, also has a small Exec lounge.

Yes, following peoples suggestions went with CW, paid £282 for 2 nights- Friday to Sunday

Price wise these go from £141 per night for Canary Wharf , to £192 for Bankside , the others come in around £150-£180 region

Tbh a decent quality breakfast + possible upgrade would be the main factors

The recent review on the main page for Hilton Bankside made me consider it, however not sure its worth an extra £100 for the 2 nights even with the pool

Same here, have around 95% success rate, only one has been clawed back which was from the Perfume Shop at Christmas (even then it wasn’t the entire amount, I assume sale items probably resulted in a lower rate in the T&C’s)

And then a hilton stay still pending, although reading the comments doesn’t look like I’m alone with Hilton, considering they weren’t on TCB, and I was going to book via Hilton website anyways, treating it as a bonus tbh if it lands

Might be a stupid question, but does spending the £150 (and same for the Harvey Nics £50) count towards the spending targets or does it effectively become net £0 spend once the statement credit is applied back

Planning a large purchase split over Amex Plat and Barclaycard Avios Plus , not sure whether to pay an amount on Amex, so I get just over 10k total spend if it is a net £0 spend , or leave it just short knowing I’ll likely spend around £300 using the various benefits in the next few months

in reply to: Finally a car dealer than accepts Amex!
    Candor 39 posts

Audi in Milton Keynes (Jardines) allowed a decent chunk via Amex (10k) via 2 seperate cards
And then a similar amount on Barclaycard as well

From looking at trips to Cyprus last year, I remember seeing that BA fly every day in peak times from Gatwick to Paphos, but also had a Saturday flight from Heathrow , meaning if you wanted to a do return from Heathrow you had to go for 7 days

Thanks, definitely leaning towards the NH Collection Roma Plazzo Cinquecento , value wise a Junior Suite is working out and very decent location for all the major tourist attractions

On a side note, anyone know if BA will a run a business class sale for flights any time soon

Planning to use an upgrade voucher on the way out , return flight for 2 was just over £500 in club , wondering if anyone had seen it get any lower in the past in sales

The Intercontinental is a very new and very pleasant conversion of an old building. Service is impeccable, and, depending on what’s on your agenda, the location is good.

As a rule of thumb, though, avoid the big chains in European cities unless you have points to burn. In most cases, they are overpriced and cater primarily for the American market – which can only be regarded as a Good Thing if you have American tastes and want to wash down a club sandwich with an overpriced cocktail in blingy surroundings.

Noted, just planning to generally touristy stuff as it will be our first visit there

Have found better value with a couple of other hotels NH Collection Roma Plazzo Cinquecento and The Grand Palace Hotel Rome around £1200 for 3 nights for mid level rooms, The Intercontinental was coming in around £1800 for a standard room

@Candor – unfortunately they wouldn’t know in the restaurant as they didn’t cook the food onsite, although the packets they received should have been labelled with the ingredients. The concept of saving money by not employing chefs is great for the business, just a bit rubbish for the customer lured by the brand.

And rather worrying for anyone with allergies

Dined at The Ivy Asia last night in Mayfair. My advice is don’t!

The food was ok but the service was chaotic, on a par with Basil Fawlty but lacking any humour. It started so well with the coat check and then just went downhill.
The clincher was being told loudly that my card had been declined when the issue was their machine. It processed correctly the 2nd time but without the 13.5% service charge or the £50 of other people’s drinks!!

    Just atrocious.

Agree, went around 2 years ago to the St Pauls one
Ordered a vegetarian starter with some kind of mince that tasted rather like meat (Partner’s vegetarian)
Asked the waiter to see if they could tell us what was in the dish
In the end nobody could actually confirm whether it was or not meat

in reply to: Collecting Avios from Uber rail and taxi trips
    Candor 39 posts

One thing to watch is that if you part pay with Uber Credits the Avios seems to be credited against the Uber Credits value. So a £10 taxi paid with £2 of Uber Credits and £8 on your credit card only earns 2 Avios not 10 (or even 8)

Yep, noticed that today as well
