@AndyGWP that’s a very good point – I’d forgotten that you can buy the points retrospectively. Might as well wait, as you say. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice on this. @GuernseyGlobetrotter it looks like I’ve got a different/worse Buy Points offer from you. As a Silver, I’m offered:

    Up to 70% bonus promo:
    • 5,000-24,000 — 20% bonus
    • 25,000-69,000 — 30% bonus
    • 70,000-119,000 — 50% bonus
    • 120,000-200,000 — 70% bonus

Which means I’d have to buy 70,000 points to get them at the 1p booster level.

As Shub says, all you have to do is email Avis to say you’ve got a Platinum card and they’ll upgrade you to President’s Club.

You can send email to one of these 2 email addresses database.northern@bsc.avis-europe.com or database.northern@abg.com with your account details, and they would update your account.

Having emailed the first address, my Avis account has now been upgraded to President’s Club.

    Thanks again Shub!

Hi Ash, it doesn’t mention those tiers. This is what it says online: https://www.americanexpress.com/icc/cards/benefits/travel/avis-preferred.html

I think you’re right. I can’t think of any other solutions.

in reply to: Not eligible to transfer Avios from Iberia

We’re also getting the same error when trying to use the Iberia Avios for a redemption.

in reply to: Not eligible to transfer Avios from Iberia
    CharlieUK

We’ve now tried all three different methods:

    – Transferring from Iberia to BAEC using Iberia.com
    – Transferring from Iberia to BAEC using BA.com
    – Creating a login with Aerlingus and using Avios.com

We’ve also tried using Safari and Firefox. However, each method throws up an error message of

    – Sorry, you currently don’t meet the terms and conditions to combine Avios
    – Service is not currently available
    – Service is not currently available

The Iberia Avios expire in 4 days’ time so I’m kind of giving up hope unless anyone else has any other suggestions.

Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to work. After he’s logged into his BAEC account and clicked on Combine My Avios under Iberia Plus, he’s presented with an error message saying “Your session has timed out, please log in again” – even though he’s still logged in. Sounds like an IT glitch to me so I wonder if it’s a temporary problem.

Has he tried doing it from his BA account? I think this might be a workaround.

Thanks NorthernLass, I’ll suggest it to him and see how he gets on.

Thanks Lady London. Your contributions have been invaluable and are a real asset to this forum.

I agree, AJA. I think 10K MR is decent and more than I would have earned in that time period.

I’ve now had a reply from Amex as follows:

Although I appreciate since opening your account in 2012 you have been earning double MR points, this may have been a special one-off promotion or agreement at that time. Unfortunately, due to time barring, we will be unable to confirm what offer may have been at the application stage in 2012.

As the Terms and Conditions were in place long before August 2021, this is not a change to your agreement, instead it is the removal of which ever offer may have been in place. For that reason, no notification of changes was issued, as there has not been any changes to your Terms and Conditions. Unfortunately, as no error has occurred, I am unable to uphold any element of your complaint, nor am I able to reinstate any MR points you feel you have missed out on. However, as I can appreciate that this may have led to some confusion, I will on this occasion be crediting your account with 10,000 MR points as a gesture of goodwill.

I very much doubt the logic they are using as it seems unlikely I’d have benefited from a ‘special one-off promotion’ for almost 10 years. However, as I don’t have the original terms and conditions, I can’t prove anything.

I’m inclined to accept the goodwill gesture of 10,000 MR points and leave it there. Like Orudge above, I also have a Capital on Tap card, so may switch over to using this.

Thanks JDB. I guess the fact that I didn’t notice the change in the earnings rate may also mean that I missed any communication. I’ve now sent a letter to Amex requesting a copy of the communication I was sent, so will see if they can come up with the evidence.

May I ask which Japan number you used?
Was it the general contact us or for exec club?

The number I called was for the Exec Club: +81 3 3298 5209

Good work, glad to hear! Japan worked well for me recently, seems a better option than the US.

    Thanks SteveJ!

Just following this up for anyone else needing to book the return of a 2-4-1 itinerary.

I chose to call the Japan number, as midnight UK time is 9am in Japan, when their line opens. If you call the number prior to midnight, you’ll get a recorded announcement in Japanese. But after midnight, you’ll get an announcement in Japanese and English, with the option to press 2 to continue in English.

I called at 00.00 exactly and waited 5 minutes to be connected. I think it was the Indian call centre. It took about 10 mins on the call to get the 2 J seats I wanted. I noticed that the other 2 J seats went at about the same time – so it’s well worth calling at midnight.

Try Japan, they’re just opening up then

That’s good to know too – thanks SteveJ.

Give it a go! Timing is tricky to get right, but I got through at 00:15 on a “hard to get” route and managed to get the tickets I wanted. I gave my tactics on another thread a couple of hours ago.

That’s great – thanks for your help, FatherofFour!

Did anyone apply for the Virgin Flying Club BA Status match earlier this year and receive a pair of Clubhouse vouchers for an upgrade to silver? I understood this was part of the status match deal and was the basis on which I booked with Virgin. I have received the siliver status match but not the Clubhouse vouchers and on emailing Virgin Flying Club they are saying this was not part of the promotion!

Hi LucyB – Yes I used the status match to get Flying Club Silver. On 9 Nov I received an email telling me about the benefits of silver, including the 2 Clubhouse vouches. Then on 12 Nov I received two separate emails, each with a Clubhouse voucher attached. It’s probably worth hassling them as with Virgin it all seems to depend on who you talk to.

They should normally appear under ‘My Activity’ on your account once you’re logged into virginatlantic.com. However, I can’t find any transactions under this at the moment and was told by an agent that this problem is currently affecting all members.

That said, earlier on in the year I made a booking in UC using points and then contacted Virgin by WhatsApp to retrospectively use an upgrade voucher. They then refunded the appropriate number of points. So at least you don’t need to wait on the phone if you want to make a booking with a voucher.
