I would say the suite upgrade is pretty great, assuming you can use it.

I used it to upgrade from an essential room to a 1 bedroom suite (the lowest that was available for my dates) at the Kimpton Fitzroy. Felt like a great usage (though it was only 4 nights, so I didn’t fully maximise the value.

The downside for me is having to call to apply the upgrade, and not being able to do it until relatively close to the stay. Given it’s based on availability there’s some chance you wouldn’t be able to use it if the hotel fills up.

After all that, I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve made a terrible mistake booking there for this weekend!

Anyway, I have a follow-up question for those who are still following this thread: I assume Galvin Bar & Grill can charge to the Kimpton bill and does anyone have any experience of splitting the final bill to two Amex cards on checkout (to take advantage of cash back on both)?

I’m not sure if you can charge to the room from there, but I’d be astonished if you couldn’t. You can from the main cocktail bar and Burr & Co.

We had no problem splitting the bill at check-out between two cards (though if relevant, it was an easier conversation because the cards were my primary card and my husband’s supplementary card, so it felt like a more natural request).

Tried everything in this thread and still no luck. Uber support completely useless. Uninstalled / re-installed / signed out and in / changed various location privacy settings. No idea what to try next.

Maybe I need to actually take a ride in the UK with Uber? Seems extreme. 😂

I was upgraded on my flight to Montreal on Saturday (Economy to Premium Economy). Digital boarding pass showed the original seat, but I asked the bag drop person to print me a paper pass and that had the new class and seat on it – she didn’t even tell me. The ticket had a message saying “Thanks from BA, enjoy your upgrade”. Totally unexpected and I’ve no idea why I’d have been upgraded over someone with status.

I was travelling alone (according to my booking), though my colleague who I was travelling with and had booked a seat next to was stuck on his own sandwiched between to randoms while I enjoyed a PE middle row to myself. 😬

On my way to Montreal from Edinburgh via London today. Plaza Premium at Edinburgh pretty empty when I arrived just after 9am. So quiet that the one visible member of staff was busy regaling the person she was serving with her life story while making the slowest G&T ever, and completely ignoring the check-in desk. Still, nice lounge.

Wonder if I’ll have any luck in LHR… 🤞

    dst87

Interesting… I didn’t know this was a benefit. I wonder if it would work for hotels in Liverpool over Eurovision weekend… I assume you need to contact the hotel directly, as even when signed in I cannot book online.

Though, I suppose they can offer to sell me a room for £2,500 / night and stop me using that benefit in that way. Seems tenuous, really.

According to the Kimpton Twitter, that password was a venue-specific promotion and not a Kimpton-side social password:

Husband managed to snag it on his Gold card (as the primary) but nothing on my Platinum. Thanks for the heads up!

I must be an anomaly – I got two notifications this morning at the same time: 1,500 welcome points posted + 1,500 bonus points posted.

I don’t think there’s prescriptivist about areas for discussion, simply a structure in place to keep relevant topics organised. If I want to see or engage in some discussion about a specific hotel loyalty scheme, it’s easy to see those.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding your suggestion, but I’d hate to have just one huge list of mixed topics. That would be a pretty unusual way to structure / run a forum.

in reply to: Free breakfast on reward nights?
    dst87

At a recent check-in (Holiday Inn MediaCityUK) I was offered drink voucher or points. When I requested breakfast it was no problem; I think the person just forgot that it was a ‘thing’ now, or possible they don’t see many who are eligible at that particular property? They had nice little vouchers to hand over at breakfast.

So far no issue whatsoever. I did have an annoying experience at the Fitzroy – they offered the breakfast and wrote that on their paperwork, but the restaurant had not been updated so each morning they told me I didn’t have breakfast… then were fine when I told them it was my diamond amenity. Fine, but a little annoying.

At another Holiday Inn property I had booked a room-only rate but was told at check-in that I hadn’t, but _should_ have because I was diamond. Then told again at breakfast – “Oh, you know you don’t need to book a breakfast inclusive rate because you get breakfast as diamond”.

So… while all of the staff have been happy to provide the breakfast and understood the benefit, there’s clearly some training teething problems across many properties. Hopefully it’ll get better as time goes on.

    dst87

Sadly not Gold. We’re flying economy (help… I haven’t done long-haul economy in quite a while…) so there are plenty of seats. Going to find out if we can expense.

I’m worried about coordinating a check-in because when I flew to Montreal earlier this year I had to contend with the horrible VeriFly app which didn’t work (apparently an issue with connecting flights?) and this meant I wasn’t able to check-in online at all. 😡 That was Business class though so it was lower stakes and, ultimately, we were seated together.

in reply to: Link two bookings to be seated together?
    dst87

True, though I’ve never not been seated with my husband when we’re travelling together. Even if it’s not guaranteed I guess there’s some consideration given.

But that’s fair enough. I think we’ll hold off and see how busy the flight looks and can always book later if it seems to be filling up. I don’t know how busy London to Montreal is in November.

I notice that this offer is no longer listed on the railcard website. The code seems to still work for now, but could be a good thing coming to an end? 🤔

Edit: damn I had this page already open and didn’T see the above comments. Sorry for the noise.

On the IHG scene, we stayed at both the Intercontinental downtown and the Kimpton St. George.

The Kimpton was great, but I wouldn’t recommend the Intercontinental too much. It felt (and this is obvious with hindsight) like a big, busy, conference hotel. We didn’t have breakfast at either place though, so I can’t comment on that.

I recommend taking the boat over to Toronto Island Park. You can spend the day there, hire some bikes to cycle around (it’s effectively car free). Some great views back over to downtown Toronto too. Just a beautiful place to be.

We did Niagara Falls and met up with some friends for a couple of nights there. Really enjoyed it, and more nature-y stuff to do than I expected. They have terrible transport links from Toronto to Niagara – there is a train, but it’s seasonal and even then runs only a couple of times a day. It wasn’t running at all when we were there. Then you’re stuck with a bus or private transfer (we got a lift from friends who had a car).

Always entertaining to read your reviews. 😆

Dusit is indeed fantastic, though I also really enjoyed the food at Baba (though I remember the ambiance being somewhat dark and loud).

I found the breakfast at this hotel appalling when we were there last year, but I put it down to covid. Sounds like they haven’t improved it much. What a shame!

At Kimpton Fitzroy yesterday offered either 1000 points or 2 x free cocktails in the bar. Opted for cocktails.

I’ve still never been asked for it, but now that digital railcards are available I’m never without my railcard. Best option IMO!

in reply to: Kimpton secret password?
    dst87

I’m curious – do folks tend to slip the password into conversation, or explicitly being it up like “The social password is {whatever}”? I can imagine the more ‘fun’ approach being completely missed by a check-in person who’s a bit tired or distracted.

What’s everyone’s best (and worst) stories about trying this?

in reply to: Kimpton Fitzroy breakfast
    dst87

Thanks all. Rob you have a point about the relative value of other options so I’ll definitely take the breakfast.

Good to hear that there may be the option of using it for room service. That could be a nice treat one morning, maybe on Monday before we leave to catch the train home.

Odd about the upcharge for cooked items. I think the diamond amenity specifically mentions cooked breakfast, so hopefully I won’t have that issue.

This is an issue with the latest iOS 16 beta. Are you using that? If so, it’s know and it’s an iOS issue.

    dst87

I need to get my head round the new system, I didn’t when it was introduced as I didn’t think either of us would be Diamond next year. Is it stays or nights which count? Planning another US road trip for next summer and could rack up quite a lot of nights at HIs etc without breaking the bank.

Nights are what counts for the milestone rewards. And those rewards are, I believe, independent of IHG One _status_. So with 20 cheap nights, for example, you could get a suite upgrade while still being Gold (assuming no status from elsewhere).

    dst87

I chose 5k points over the Suite Upgrade Voucher. Maybe I was a bit premature but read the best flex rate policy and assumed alongside that the upgrade was dependent on availability in the same style as Marriott’s SNA’s.

It is dependent on availability, and that was a big concern of mine – all lower level suites being sold out 14 days out. I was fully prepared for a battle (or disappointment) when I called today. I had already noticed online that the lowest suite had no availability shown, and I also had concerns about the Railcard rate that I had used.

I suspect if only a premium / named suite (like the Fitzroy suite) was available I would not have been eligible, but it seems like there may be some flexibility in the pool of suites that are eligible.

in reply to: Railcard discount for IHG bookings
    dst87

Adding here for anyone curious – I just used the Confirmable Suite Upgrade voucher on a Railcard booking and that did not cause any issue, so this rate appears to be valid.
