Perhaps the first improvement would be teaching staff the words ‘yes, we can!’ rather than plain ‘no!’

    Here is the thread link:

    https://www.headforpoints.com/forums/topic/your-account-is-temporarily-unable-to-access-the-referral-programme/

The view was it was either some IT error or Amex were varying who was allowed to refer in a similar manner to how we don’t get all Amex offers.

I had the ability to refer removed which was of little concern other than the deep shame it caused me. However it was no skin off my nose and without doing anything it was reinstated several months later. Since then they seem to have been pushing me to refer with enhanced referral bonuses.

As I have no friends I have nobody to refer so it doesn’t make any difference to me.

Perhaps I don’t have any friends, now!

    eppleby 32 posts

@eppleby this has been quite widely reported on HfP and many people are seemingly precluded from referral bonuses. Amex has also been declining referral bonuses when the referee is not eligible for SUBs, a change on previous policy.

The cost of referrals, SUBs and retentions has skyrocketed, so there has been some tightening at the margins.

Why doesn’t Amex tell customers? If I’d have known then I wouldn’t have put myself out!

    eppleby 32 posts

Amex have, for some reason, suspended my eligibilty to ‘refer a friend’. I contacted Amex ‘chat’ and spent about two hours trying to chat because each time that I tried to input a question or answer of any length I lost the connection and had to start again. I then phoned Brighton and spoke with first a call centre receptionist who couldn’t tell me why I had lost the eligibility and then I spoke to a manager. This manager informed me that ‘the system’ had decided to suspend my eligibility and that no one at Amex would be able to answer my question because no one could access the relevant information no matter who I talked to.
So I wrote to Amex with the same question and received a telephone call to tell me that they would look into it. That was a week ago with no progree.
The reson that I have written this is that since Christmas 2022 I have been trying to persuade a couple of friends that the Platinum card would be useful to then and, just a week ago, one of the friends asked me to refer them.
It might be a good idea for all Amex card holders to check their ‘refer a friend’ eligibility because it appears that it takes a long time before Amex are prepared to take any action if, indeed, they are prepared to take any action.
There has been no change, as far as I am aware, in my account and no late or underpayments!

After BA cancelled LBA connections we used to use MAN to LHR (MAN is about 2.5 hrs from home by car). After all the bad press concerning MAN we have now switched our allegiance to NCL (Newcastle is about 2.5 hrs from home). We, always, travel to LHR on the evening prior to the long haul flight.
We, always, splash out on the Sofitel purely for the convenience.

’We’re’ is the diminutive of ‘We are’! Thus my English is correct! I don’t (do not) indicate or suggest that our taking of the flight is dependent upon whether we can pre-choose our meals but the reason that we wanted to know was so that we could either choose to eat pre-flight or during the flight.

We’re flying LHR to PHL (BA067) on 19th. April 2023 in First Class. Until yesterday 19th. March 2023 – when I checked the preorder meals offer for this flight I saw that meals could only be ordered 30 days before the flight so I waited until today (which is 30 days until the flight). Today when I do the same check it says that meals can only be ordered once one is onboard the flight! What happened?

Slightly off topic! My wife and I want to get to Fort Lauderdale next year. We will have the new 2-4-1 voucher. My question is am I able to book, say LHR to PHL on BA and, say, PHL to Fort Lauderdale on, say AA, using the 241?

Perhaps I should have qualified my question! I am looking to book a first class flight as a special treat (to celebrate my wife’s retirement) and there does not appear to be first class availability to Miami!

It wasn’t so much the points issue – that’s their choice and my choice follows from it.

Its the fact that I’ve had to spend ONE HOUR in chat with them – after I was disconnected above, I stayed and a new “advisor” came along.

In one hour I got transferred FOUR times, cut off twice and struggled to raise a complaint about the cancellation process.

They EXPECT customer to call on the last day of the “contract” to cancel – it is impossible to advise them in advance; unless you wish to cancel there and then and lose the perks already paid for (and those accumulated).
Try theDaily Mail subscription – they don’t let you cancel in advance and will only cancel if you telephone! Obviously they think that they can persuade you to renew your subscription and no offer of a bonus!

That is an unfair contract term – and can only be in place as they know so many will miss that deadline and they earn renewal fees etc

I am not aware of any other industry which bans customers from notifying them they do not wish to renew a product or service.

And on the points issue, I spent £72,000 on the card over the last 2 years, so expected more. Obviously I will get it with the Virgin+ Card but their customer service is even worse lol

T&C’s say that the avios will be credited within 21 days of checkout however, on a recent booking, I did not receive the avios within 21 days and when I queried it the reply was that they had been overlooked due to a technical problem!

I don’t know if award seat passengers are deliberately discriminated against but on a recent CW flight Chicago to LHR the cc member took my drinks order in strict row order I was in row 8 and my order was taken after row7 and with other passengers in row 8. I then waited for the best part of an hour whilst everybody else, including the rest of row 8, received their drinks before I was served. I only ordered a G&T.

All 430 tier points were earned in April! In order to get the 20 extra I am going to fly to Munich in September, on CE return on a cash booking and try to book my wife the same flight on an Avios booking!
