Traveling through Singapore in a few days, which lounge is better in terms of food & drinks? QF First or QR?

As previously mentioned by others, my wife got avios and TP after flying a 241 avios ticket. The 241 was on my name (however I later changed my frequent flyer number to Iberia, as I’m IB platinum, and got nothing). For the short haul, it mentions Club Europe (U) and for the long haul Club World (I). I thought that U class is the normal business fare with avios, so even weirder to get avios.
In MMB before the flight, it said 0 avios and TPs.
I’m thinking to change back my frequent flyer to BA, to see if they give some avios on the return flight, what do you think? I will loose the option of entering the first class lounge in Singapore and LHR T5, as my wife is just BA silver.

Is there any way that someone could get a passport renewal tomorrow without appointment by going to one of the passport offices? My father in law just realized that his passport is expired (he hasn’t travel since before covid) and he has a flight on Saturday night. He doesnt mind travelling to anywhere in the UK to get it, as the trip is quite important.

Does BA sell upgrades from Business to First at the airport? If so, how much does it usually ask for it?
Flying today to HKG (using avios), I kept checking until yesterday to see if First class avios tickets open up, but no luck. However according to Seat Alerts by Expertflyer, there are still 4 seats unassigned (although I recognise it is still quite early and more people could do the check in). If reasonable price, I would be really interested in trying first for once in my life (flown many time business with different airlines, but never first)

@davefl, phew, thanks, I could only recall horror stories from @meta and @cat!

Once on board they are fine.fine. It’s if anything goes wrong where things are bad …

Remember the article not that long ago that was written about some trip either Rob or rhys did to TAP where a few people thought an opportunity had been lost to ask the CEO about their appalling customer service Dealing with refunds and EU261 compo?

I slightly disagree, back in April last year they cancelled my flight 10-12 days before the flight and rebooked me in a flight departing the next day. Although they did not answer my claim, I put a claim with AviationADR and at the end of June got 800 euros (400 each, the flight was LIS-MAN). Overall very satisfied, as I enjoyed an extra day with family (no hotel needed) and got back 3 times what I paid for the flights.

    Morning, quick data point.
Both restaurants in Madrid on the overseas dining credit that I visited on Sunday showed up on my statement yesterday. This morning, it’s showing that I have already been credited. That’s quicker than the ones in the Uk I have used.

We’re going to Madrid in March. Which restaurants did you visit, and would you return to them at full price?

Im far from a food expert but we went to Bibo Dani Garcia and thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend. The other one which I wouldn’t bother with was ultamarinos Quintin.

I agree with BiBo, we really enjoyed it and it was reasonably priced (50-60 euros per person before the cashback). I can’t say the same for Amazónico (same group as Ultramarinos Quintin), although the food wasn’t bad, it was ridiculously overpriced (around 90 euros per person and we were still hungry after it). La máquina is quite good.

I have recently booked 5 nights for next Easter in Le Meridien Dahab for 48k Marriott points. Quite good value as the rate per night was around £130.

You can book Latam flights with Avios through Iberia. Iberia also offers Avianca flights but you have to call (look for availability in United website before).

Thanks for the recommendations about MH and Singapore airport. I have finally decided to pay more (aprox doble than the other two flights) so I’ll have 4.40h of layover with MH, so a bit on the safer side. I have been quite a few times in Singapore, so prefer to spend a bit longer in KL, since we are visiting family.

I need some advise: I have to book a flight from KUL to SIN to connect with my BA flight back home. Is 2.40h enough connecting time (two different bookings and with checked luggage)? If I want to fly Malaysian Airlines that is my best option, otherwise it is significantly more expensive or I have to spent 8h in SIN. My other option is to fly with Air Asia (that is even cheaper), but KLIA2 is awful…

Good result – did you book separate legs or by calling BA?

I called BA and after 10 minutes they answered the phone, around 30 min in total to book it. I checked that they charged me exactly the same than doing two one-ways, so much easier this way (and there was plenty of availability plus I was quite flexible with my dates).

Thanks to yesterday’s 241 story I got two Business Class seats to Asia (outbound HKG, inbound SIN, from MAN). I didn’t know that there is even more availability if looking from other airports than London. I used to first look for flights from London, and then if there was availability (usually not), look for the connection from MAN! There were lot of availability for end of January and beginning or February to both destinations and even to Tokyo (I considered flying there and spend 5-6 days, but it seems to be quite cold now). Even after many years reading HFP and thinking that I know a lot (especially about BA and avios related topics), I keep learning almost every day in this site! Thanks to Rob and the team!

@gtellez, presumably 200k avios is the new RFS pricing? 150k plus £1540 sounds like the old peak pricing (can you move your dates slightly?) which can still work if the cash element fits your budget. There is a slight benefit for regional travellers now, as the domestic legs seem to be absolutely free on long haul instead of having to pay local tax for your departure airport.

It is off-peak, not sure what the price for peak would be!

I am about to make a booking from Manchester to Hong Kong using a 241 in business. It is the first time I´m doing an avios booking since the changes, I thought that the changes were supposed to benefit 241 voucher holders. However it is asking me 200K avios plus £1,100. Then there is an option that is 150K avios plus £1,540 that seems better to me, since I am saving 50K avios for £460 (it has been a long time since you could obtain avios that cheap, i.e. 0.0092 per avio). I can see that is better than transferring avios to Nectar, but that is something that I have never done (neither will). Overall dissapointed, as I thought I was going to save something…

It depends a lot on the cabin crew. Two weeks ago flying Madrid to Dakar we had to wear the masks the entire flight (I was reminded by the crew a couple of times). On the way back it wasn’t strictly enforced, just for boarding and disembarking.

I think it was mentioned yesterday, there’s an IHG points discount showing for me for the next couple of months. It appeared in Asia yesterday but now showing at some of the UK properties I had booked for early March.

I can’t find the offer, do you need to opt in? I have a booking for 5 nights in Hong Kong at the end of the month, but the price is exactly the same as I payed when I booked few weeks ago.

I think I’ll email the hotel before booking the night before, if they offer me something like 8-9am, I may wait and have a nice breakfast while saving over £200. If they don’t want to give me the room until 3pm, I definitely need the room before and I’ll have to pay for it…

I advise you just to go, be polite, ask to drop your bags and politely ask what’s possible.

That was my original plan, but I go with a 2 years old and it is after a 5h flight in economy, so I definitely need the room and can gamble it.
I have contact the hotel and they have offered me the room at 6am for 150 euros, that seems high but it is cheaper than booking the previous night (250 euros or 35k points). So I’m afraid that can’t do anything else than paying it…

I’m right now in Senegal, amazing weather (25-30 degrees max everyday and sunny). We flew through Madrid (4.5h flight, no time difference nor jetlag), being a really good avios redemption (cash fares in economy were about £1k and we got the flights for something like 5k avios and £215, Madrid-Dakar, booked the flights from UK in a separate booking). We are staying at a Riu Hotel in Point Sarene, not the most luxurious but the food is good and it has lots of activities for the children, my kid is loving it. We paid €1550 for 7 nights all inclusive. It is full of French families and it is really similar to any big hotel in Mexico or Punta Cana.

I hadn’t considered the option of flying south into Africa but had a look at the suggestion and it seems lovely and at that redemption level that’s pretty impressive. What plane were you on?

A321 with intra-EU business class, so not worth it for us to pay the difference for business. Luckily the flight wasn’t full and got two empty middle seats. Business is quite cheap with avios anyways. You could use a 241 now (probably I would have gone for business if 241 were ok to be used in Iberia back when I bought the flights few months ago). The worst is the inbound flight time, at 22.45!

It is correct, the same happened to me few months ago with TAP, they only paid compensation for my wife and me, not my son.

At least it worked for me, however take into account that it could be fixed before your stay and you may end paying more (as the ambassador fare is usually significantly higher).

You can use it again, I have used mine several times this year and it is still showing in my account.

in reply to: Likelihood of sale in 2023 with Iberia Plus?
    gtellez

Iberia used to run these deals 2 or 3 times a year (some of them were exclusively for IB credit cardholders), although the last one was almost a year ago. Not sure if they will do it again, hope so though. However if you have the avios you can book now and then cancel for 25 euros per person if they run a promotion. IB always releases 2 seats in business and if you cancel a booking they are automatically released again (although you don’t receive the avios back until few days later, so you would need to have extra avios in your account).
