Forgot to mention the TYO leg is on a partner (JAL) so in this case it’s a case of cancel and re-book (hoping avios availability reappears for the full itinerary).

Seems they have tightened up the rules. My routing was rejected as it wasn’t the most direct routing.

They also quoted taxes of £1,600+ per person, using the maximum avios amount. Booking individual flights without the 241 came to £143.15 so it was a no brainer in the end. Adding an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight and mixing with BA resulted in the taxes being calculated as if it were a cash booking. They would not budge on that despite the fact that the website uses the avios pricing to calculate the cash element for DUB-LHR-NYC on EI/BA.

So fell back to HKG-LON-(1 week layover)-NYC

Yes, you can have up to eight sectors including stopovers as long as you comply with all the other fare construction rules. Seats in business DUB-JFK may not be as easy to find as they are from LHR.

Max 8 sectors on an award booking, but 6 sectors if using a voucher.

Unfortunately they priced it as avios + taxes (incl YQ of each flight as if it were a cash booking). This resulted in a quote of over £2,000 for the cash element, using the maximum avios option.

Buying each flight individually would result in around £300 as the cash element. They have sent it back to ticketing to be priced again.

Mixing Aer Lingus with BA resulted in them calculating and quoting the taxes of the equivalent cash ticket (+ the avios at the discounted 241 rate). In the end they wanted over £1,600 in taxes at the highest avios rate! I declined.

Haven’t been able to find guidance for this niche case. Now that the 2-4-1 can be booked using non-UK starting points, I booked HKG-LHR-JFK as a one-way. I have flown the first leg to London. Can I still phone up before flying the LHR-JFK leg and add a return flight using the voucher (JFK-LHR-HKG)?

Second question, can I make changes to the return dates or does it become non-changeable once booked and the outbound has been flown?

I live overseas and hold the AMEX UK Plat Charge Card. AMEX have told me in the past that I can’t create any new cards but I can continue to maintain UK cards with a non-UK residential address.

Does this update mean my card will be terminated as a non-UK resident?

“your residential address for your account must be an address in the United Kingdom”.

I have made travel insurance claims for incidents during trips to the UK and these have been approved so AMEX/AXA have been ok with my situation up to this point.

Time to find a new card?

If the transaction clears one day after the deadline, but posts as the day before the deadline, does the voucher appear or is some manual intervention required?
