Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

  • It is now sorted. I probably didn’t explain properly, it was a change of route from SFO to YVR as well as an upgrade. It turned out that she did not quite have enough Avios, which is probably why the first Agent said there was no availability. The 2nd Agent was more helpful and let her change to a different Avios Cash mix, and she was able to book.

    Thanks for your help,

Just £70 to cancel 2 people return.

    Thanks

It’s £35 pp, per booking (so each separate PNR), regardless of how many sectors there are in the booking.

Thanks that’s good to know! Sorry, for a follow up question (I should know this as I have cancelled flights before but I can’t remember) Is that £35 per booking each way or just literally per booking? So it is £70 to cancel 2 people return or £140?

I have got a vaguely related question! Thinking of booking LHR > SYD Return for 2 people using companion voucher. There is currently availability for the dates I am looking at but only about 70% sure we can go, so very good chance we will need to cancel, but tempted to grab b the seats whilst they are available!

I think the cancellation fee £35 per person per flight, so think it will cost me £140 to cancel if we book then change our minds. However I am wondering if it might be more than this! Does both BA15 count as one flight or 2? On return flight I have an option dependent on date of BA16 right through (which as noted above is fewer Avios) or BA12/BA16 mix. Are these going to attract different cancellation fees?

Over the years I have seen frequent mention on the forums of Avios not being awarded and always found that odd as it has always worked for me and I have collected tens of thousands of Avios from Booking.com and airbnb. In the last week however I have had 3 emails telling me that 3 different stays were not eligible! I can’t work out what I did differently but some useful suggestions in this thread (such as clearing the cache) which I will probably try next time!

Accounts opened in November. I ended up with 2 profiles and have had all sorts of issues! One of which is I have never received the £5 credit although last time I complained I did get £15 for the 3 missing credits applied to my acccount as a goodwill gesture, but needless to say the issue is still ongoing with no credits received since!

I am not optimistic that I will get the 100k Avios as their systems don’t seem to think I have both the necessary accounts and I never got the email telling me I was eligible, so no doubt will spend many more hours complaining!

Did anyone ever find a solution to this. I get the same errors reported above. I have 200 Avios about to expire in my Iberia Account. It is only 200 Avios so not a massive issue but still a shame to lose them!

Ignore my question. I have fixed it thanks to a workaround on another thread. It works in Chrome, just not in Safari!

in reply to: Curve questions – is it worth it?
    HughR 22 posts

I have the Curve free card but haven’t used it since getting the Avios Barclaycard. Am I right that I can use this for Foreign Spend, up to £1000 a month, avoid Barclaycard foreign transaction fees and earn a few Avios. I know I would lose Section 75 protection but for day to day foreign spend I can only see upsides for using it, or am I missing something fundamental?

into Barlcays avios rewards on the barclays app, I tried on the barclaycard app as I could see the account there and it worked, have you tried both apps?

Wow, Thank you! That almost worked. I got past the AV006 error, linked my accounts successfully, it asked me which account I wanted to fund my Avios Rewards from but then took me back to the Home Screen. From the App I can now go to the rewards section without the AV006 error message it doesn’t tell me I am enrolled but if I try and enro it is telling me that none of my accounts are eligible, so not sure if I am enrolled or not.

Time to contact Barclays again I think!

live chat were so unhelpful they did not even recognise it as a valid error

No, it looks to be an undocumented error. The CS Agent I was speaking to said the same thing although she did eventually find someone in IT who recognised the error message, but that did not help in fixing the issue!

My wife had the same thing. My wife and I earn the same amount, I provided tax returns, computations, bank statements the lot for her (they never asked for mine). I got £10k limit off the bat and she got £200 which they refused to increase it.

Anyway we managed to hit the spend target by making a £200 transaction. Pay the card off by bank transfer which should clear your account within 2 hours so you can spend another £200.

You obviously can’t use it for large transactions but if topping up something like Amazon, the process works albeit laborious.

I am in a similar situation. Can I just check that taking this approach, any additional spend over what would have been the credit limit still generates Avios points as well as counting towards the target spend? I remember ages ago reading that this approach did not generate points, but that might have been with a different credit card!

    Thanks for the feedback

One reason why the ex MEX flight will be cheaper than you expect would be because BA doesn’t charge as much for its carrier surcharge than is does ex USA.

    Good to know! Thanks

TBH I’m really not sure if BA can book this using avios. The app allows it as a cash fare. It’s not a return but it’s not an open jaw either so I’m at a loss as to what to call it!

It looks to be bookable online on BA.com as 2 one way unconnected tickets, at least I can get as far as the pricing page! I can’t cost it as one trip online so don’t know if it is bookable or not or what it would cost!

The biggest benefit to booking it as one ticket (if you can) is if there is a cancellation or change to either the outbound or inbound flights you have more flexibility.

Booked as two one ways also means potentially double the admin fees if you want to make changes to both legs.

Good points. I am looking at options for my daughter and I think they would probably take that risk. Flip side I think is that if they somehow got delayed on way to madrid and missed their flight the return flight would still be valid!

I assume you’ve planned how to get from Mex to CUN.

Only at a high level. Stay a might or two in Mex and quick search online suggests economy flights for around £70. There is no Avios option that I am aware of!

Thanks Triavpo and CarpalTravel for the feedback.

I would agree if it were Club Suite not to waste money reserving seats. Unfortunately it’s an A380 which doesn’t have them.

We are actually on the same flight and managed to secure 2 first seats when the plane got changed to an A380. I have a Seatspy alert in case any more first become available but am not hugely optimistic! Our friends have not travelled club long haul before so I am keen they have the best experience as I talked them into the Avios collecting game and this will be their first redemption. I think/hope we can guest them into the CCR so that should definitely help!

I don’t have an Iberia account. Don’t I need to have had one for a certain length of time and earned some avios in it, or am I remembering incorrectly?

Sorry, You may be right about earning Avios, I can’t remember!

Fly with Iberia via Madrid. Without calling I can’t get the cost of the connection to London, but I can see availability from NYC to MAD for 68,000 Avios and £117 for 2.

I have a car hire coming up in Italy. My car hire voucher states in bold that the credit card used must have embossed numbers (not sure if they are planning to put it through an old fashioned manual carbon paper device?) I am not sure if they will actually apply this rule but if so I can’t use my Platinum card, nor annoyingly can I use my Halifax Clarity card which I would normally use for the better exchange rate! Can I decline the hire company insurance? Am I still covered for the car hire insurance if I use a different card?
