I’m going to go against most of the crowd and say that for an early morning flight I’d now stay at whatever terminal I was flying from. Having experienced an occasion when the monorail went down last year I wouldn’t want to deal with that whilst trying to catch an early flight – it would negate any benefit of staying so close! We were lucky and just needed to get from South, where we’d arrived by train, to North, where we were staying overnight at the Sofitel. We were waiting for the monorail when it went down and it ended up taking an hour to get to the other terminal. There were some very stressed people! They did put on replacement buses but it took them a while to get them organised and then boarding them was utter chaos.

As others have said, as long as it complies with open jaw rules about distance between points it’s fine, you just need to book by phone. For example, this year we’re booked to use a companion voucher to fly from Gatwick to Orlando and then back from Boston to Heathrow.

Pumpkin Cafe – spend £10 get £10 back
Upper Crust – spend £10 get £10 back

Seen on Amex free MR and Amex Platinum

So far, no Cafe Ritazza or Millies Cookies offers like the last time (at least not on my cards!) 🙂

I’ve not got that on my platinum but on BAPP I’ve got “spend £10 twice get £10 back once” for both.

Thanks @PeteM that’s really interesting and useful – we’re in the early stages of planning a potential trip next year.

Thanks all. I appreciate that they’re close together but I might investigate a couple of nights in Lisbon followed by three in Estoril.

There’s a recent thread on this. See here.

Thanks all – lots to think about there. We’ll give it a little while for schedules to settle down, have a chat about what we would/would not be happy with and then give them a call and see what they’re prepared to do.

They’ve been released. I guess it may have been at 11am.

No it isn’t. Things like online takeout ordering, restaurant reservations etc all want US numbers so they can txt you with updates. Most of the time they barf when you try and add international numbers.

Also setting up account with Lyft, far more preferable to have a US number as the drivers often call or text for location and they are unlikely to dial an international one.

You beat me to the explanation!

Thanks, I don’t think Airalo will give me a US number though will it?

in reply to: The mobile data / international roaming thread
    Iona 67 posts

I have read through the thread and I’m sure I should be able to work this out for myself but if I explain what I have/want could some very kind soul let me know what the best option is please?

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max and a SIM only contract with Sky. I also have an old iPhone (I think 8?) that I could use alongside my current one if needed.

I’m going to the US for ~25 days in the autumn and then for a slightly shorter period in the spring.

I want to use mobile data (not a significant amount: Google Maps, ride share apps, a bit of web browsing) and a US number that I can be called on/receive texts to.

Ideally I’d like to be able to use the same number on both trips and I’d also like to still be able to receive calls, texts & WhatsApp messages on my UK number.

Is this possible? If so, where do I start?

    Thank you!!!

I’m not a big fan of the Metropole over by the NEC and particularly not the “single deluxe” rooms there. I know it’s sold as a single room and so you’re not going to be sharing with anyone but I still object to the complete lack of a bathroom door!

Have you checked the MLB schedule? You didn’t say which month and there are a couple of Saturdays in September when the Red Sox are at Fenway Park. I’d count that as must-see if you are there then. Even without a game, the tour is worth it.

Otherwise +1 for Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum

Freedom Trail is the obvious thing, even the theatrical bits with people in costumes.

Yes – we’re out of luck (maybe next time!). A tour of Fenway Park is definitely on my list though.

We’ll definitely have to look into the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum given all the recommendations and then I guess the Freedom Trail would be a good way to see a fair bit of the city too.

    Thanks all!

Not sure it’s quite what you’re after as it’s mixed class but I booked one way LHR-BOS for travel in September 2022 in September 2021 for a cash element of £906.94 for two passengers (with a companion voucher). Then added on a return in CW for another £442.40 a few weeks later.

It is on all our BAPP and personal plat. Waitrose is excluded. If I buy John Lewis gift card ma from online or in store, can I use it at waitrose? Thx

Whereas I’ve got it on a Gold card (which is a supplementary one, my husband has the account) but not my own BAPP or Platinum….

I’ve gone 10 days as a 7 day disney pass gets an extra 7 days free, so 14 in total, although I think my kids would like to go to Universal – or at least to the Harry Potter thing that they have going on there.

If you’re planning on visiting Universal I can recommend a night at one of their hotels (Portofino Bay, Hard Rock or Royal Pacific) for the free express passes.
