Sorry ignore that last post, just realised the thread is about the upgrade vouchers rather than companion ones!

I managed to book CW flights from Glasgow to Tokyo in June this morning with a new style companion voucher including the domestic connection directly through the BA site without having to speak to anyone and it didn’t cost any more avios, I think not being able to book domestic connections sometimes is due to avios availability on those flights as in the past I have had to phone BA to add that leg of the journey later as seats become available. I was pleasantly surprised how little faff it was this time.

To add a datapoint, I managed to book Business class flights to Tokyo in June using one of the new style companion vouchers today when there hasn’t been availability showing on seatspy for Business at all for months (makes me wish I’d tried using the new style voucher sooner as I’ve been keeping my eye out for ages).

I was happy with the outcome but agree it’s slightly inconvenient you have to go through the BA booking system each time you want to check availability. Was also bit annoying I had to use to the new style voucher when I still have an old style one that expires sooner.

I’m in the same boat in that I opened my Iberia account in May, earned points into it via the estore (Also an error linking to AMEX to transfer membership points which was my first choice) but the system still won’t let me link with BA account so seems to be a common issue.

I have held a BAPP for a few years and always sort of think the annual fee is worth it for the cost of the companion voucher and maybe a couple of good statement credit offers. I also got a Platinum Amex recently and again I think the offer of the 70k sign up bonus, Harvey Nichols Credits, Restaurant Credits, insurance and a few airport lounge visits seems reasonable for the annual fee.

I think as long as loopholes exist people will exploit them and while I don’t cry myself to sleep over the thought of major financial institutions losing money, it seems if these sort of practices are rife there isn’t parity for people who do pay full fees year on year,so it does strike me as a bit unfair in that regard.

Apologies if this is to basic a question but seems to me the easiest thing for Amex to do to stop this type of thing would be to not issue pro rata refunds of fees for cancellation and only provide the benefits/bonus for those who pay for the full year of membership (which they have already charged). Is there something legally stopping them from doing this or any other reason it’s not in their interest?

Thanks for the advice, will do a deeper dive into it and report back, was just hoping someone might have an off the shelf answer. Might be easier to get separate cover just for that trip.

I was in the USA earlier this year and don’t plan on going back again for a few years so not being able to get an ESTA is not an immediate concern but will remember to take it into consideration well in advance of my next visit.

    Joe G

You should be able to use the Plaza Premium Lounge too if you have a Platinum Amex so would hope to think there would be space in one of the 3 lounges available.

I haven’t flown from Edinburgh since the Plaza Premium opened but am flying from there on Saturday so would be keen to know which lounge of the three people would recommend as a first choice!

I cancelled my old non rewards earning Barclaycard pretty soon after they were first announced and I have it down in my calendar as October before I can re-apply and get the bonus. That said as JDB mentions after the 50K offer over the summer I will definitely hold off for a bit in case something similar comes up again.

I signed up as I needed to wait out 6 months before I’m eligible for the Barclaycard sign up bonus and it seemed like an easy enough way to get 3000 bonus Avios (though that still hasn’t appeared) and also a way to earn some avios on non AMEX spend in the interim.

I didn’t have any of the issues anyone is reporting and the card worked as it should have but even then I think all the hoops you have to jump through (and I’m anticipating cancellation won’t be easy) the 3000 avios along with poor earning rate probably isn’t incentive in itself to get the card, especially if you already have an Avios Barclaycard.

    Joe G

I was burnt a bit on this too this year putting quite a large spend on my BAPP (mainly due to a statement credit offer) and earned my voucher very early in the membership year when I would have preferred some more time on it.

I find it quite odd that the voucher is tied to the date the spend amount is triggered as surely in a lot of cases that means people may hold back on spending on the card to maximise the time they have on the voucher. Assuming AMEX actually want you to spend on the card you would think it would be better linked to the end of the membership year you earned it.

Good to know thanks, I have a couple of friends who are interested in collecting Avios/Reward points but maybe don’t want to jump in at the deep end with the Platinum so this could be useful!

Thanks for the advice, I’ll probably end up chalking it up as a lesson for next time as it’s probably not worth all the faff. I did pay with the right card just not in the right way. All the more annoying as the fully refundable non deposit option would have been about £5 more so I still would have been £95 up had a gone with it!

    Joe G

Thanks for the advice everyone, doesn’t look too hopeful then,

I think the “Don’t even think about it” signs are a good idea as I’d prefer to be saved the bother of even having to ask if it’s that bad. Will be interesting to see if the Plaza Premium is any better when it appears. They should probably change the name of the card to low priority pass seeing as holders seem to be the last in the pecking order as to who is granted access!
